SM58 as good for instruments as SM57?

Of course there is some element of randomness. Shure periodically has to retool, and when that happens, a new batch might come out sounding a little different. If the difference is *significant* you are more likely to be hearing wear & tear, exposure to the elements, or abuse. The 57 and the...

Oh.. I like that one.. We did something similar on our last album, but we used really apathetic sounding speech instead of whispers. Got a bit of the "thoughts swarming in your head" effect.

SM58 as good for instruments as SM57?

Hey Terry, I really like your playing. Were all of the guitars recorded with the 58, or just the lead guitar?

    Doubling Vocals with Reverb

No correct answer either :) .. I tend to use *reduced* effects on all non-featured vocals.. including overdubs (and I create one track with all the "featured" takes).

On screamy male singers, get overdubs of a lower octave for the whole song. When the mood goes dark, mix them in at 1/2volume.

SM58 as good for instruments as SM57?

I don't really want to spend a lot of time justifying myself, but the Bear made beligerant comments towards me, justifying it by saying I was repeating information he had already established, where in fact -- his last post was directly contradictory, and quite wrong. He said that if you lose...

SM58 as good for instruments as SM57?

still4given: One other thing.. I just realized that you're talking about the ball-foam, whereas I'm reffering to the piece of foam that is on the end of the resoonator assembly on the 58, which doesn't exist on the 57. Yes, perhaps it's not terribly thick.. it is fairly dense, and it's very...

SM58 as good for instruments as SM57?

Yeah, you're a prick. Now back to the topic at hand, according to the Shure website, the 58 has a higher response above 5k because of both the windscreen distance *and* the resonator assembly. This exaplains the more *open* and *aggressive* sound I was describing. Still4Given: I certainly...

Roll eyes as much as you want, it has a different windscreen, and thick foam windscreens are hardly acoustically transparent.

ADA-8000 reviews also: http://www.soundonsound.com/sos/jun04/articles/behringerada.htm It's not the cats meow, but we're not talking about a piece of garbage here, and for many people, it's more than sufficient.

    New setup

http://kensingtonhost.com/btkf.mp3 Kinda light compared to the rest of the album, but one of my favorites. I am doing backup vocals on this track. Keep in mind, we had all this gear to record on: http://www.radiostarstudios.com/gear_instruments.asp

Oh brother.. once again.. I've deleted the file. I think my guitarist left a copy on CD here somewhere.. time to dig through the piles :)

    New setup

I've done some testing on the Behringer box at a friends studio over the course of a half hour or so. Admittedly, I didn't have anything else there to compare it to, but the raw sound wasn't bad. I will post a clip... as soon as I find it. I have just ordered 2 ADA-8000's to compliment a RME...

SM58 as good for instruments as SM57?

Actually, I use a 58 without the grille for guitars frequently. I'd be afraid using it near flying sticks though :) It's *not* the same sound as the 57 -- I would characterize it as being more "open" and aggressive on guitars.

Wow. I'm going to see what I can do about renting a pair of Oktavas, but from your description I may want to add them to my permanent collection. Your posts are very much appreciated. I'd also be interested in hearing other opinions. I've got enough info to do this project, but I have some room...

I really like the ADA8000, but I don't disagree there are better pieces of hardware out there ... without a doubt. The ada8000 is great bang for the buck though, and very few people who have experience with a handful of digital cards will disagree with the RME -- I refuse to buy any other brand...

Thanks! The noise problem is not severe. I haven't checked background noise levels, but I think that when I do they will be very low -- however, the room is certainly not sound proofed. I'd consider spending a bit more on the overheads. I have never considered using the Oktava simply because I...
