    recording techniq...a cheatsheet for musicians

Tape Op recently had a good interview with a studio that had a bar in house that opened up after the day was done...partly as an incentive too.

    recording techniq...a cheatsheet for musicians

Good one... Also as has been discussed here there are *reasons* why most home recordings still don't have the sparkle etc...the problem isn't the people who DO understand, is it? It's much more rewarding recording with people who are similarly driven to get a good sound because they know it...

    recording techniq...a cheatsheet for musicians

CONCEPTS/TECHNIQUES THAT YOU SHOULD UNDERSTAND AND UTILIZE TO GET THE MOST OUT OF YOUR RECORDINGS: I'd love to collate a half page (length chosen for musicians' attention spans) or a big lettering full page with bullets on very basic concepts for any band/person who is going into the studio for...

    Choosing a first condenser.

The Behringer B-2 sounded good doing vocals by both my ears and a professional that I lent it to.

That E-Drum sound..better than the real thing?

For me if I learn that a song has no real drummer, it's like finding out that an intake or fancy exhaust on a car is fake. May look good but the content is that less interesting to me, even though I still may like it. You may accomplish your goal but for me... I'll let yall know when some of...

What is a good cymbal cleaner?

I don't because mine are an investment....actually I'm on the other side. I spread a bit of old wine on my cymbals. I like where the dryness is with older cymbals.

    Recording Electric Guitar

Actually one of the only things I've ever done well in my few recordings had been getting a killer guitar tone with a single ES-57 (3 for $80 at speakerrepair.com) near the edge of a speaker. I think the 57s like loud sources, and they excel at capturing those loud sounds...I miced a Traynor...

    Rap Oriented (advice please)

Get an interface. A USB interface might not be a long term device in your recording setup, but will be far far better sounding and longer lasting than a USB mic. Then, get a good mic, recommendations I'll leave to 'budget mic' forum searches. For example I use a Behringer B2 Pro ($150, large...

    Thoughts on ART MPA Gold?

How is it a one trick pony?

    Buzz in the middle tom

There can be rattling things inside lugs, the lugs/screws themselves, or worst case is a poorly tuned/uneven bearing edge, which can cause a head to sizzle against the wood with certain (or any) kinds of tuning.

Vocals in Zeppelin's When the Levee Breaks

Are they distorted/clipping slightly when they come in? Not in the middle part where they more obviously are... If so, I think I like it. Sounds like subtle preamp clipping to me?

Vocals in Zeppelin's When the Levee Breaks

edit: thread title was for wrong forum! But I was going to post here how I finally bought reaper non-commercial version, took me too long but I've been using it a lot lately. Also, love how the files are cross platform compatible from XP 32 bit to Vista 64 bit.

Please critique my first all analog mix...

He said he did it with a brush. Sounded like that's the sound he was aiming for. For the OP, how are your brush skills? Just a one song thing or do you regularly use brushes?

stuff to improve mixes $1000 budget

Have you tried the free reaper vocal tuner? Easy and very effective...recently used it sparingly to really fix a bad chorus of people.

    "gang vocals"

But I'm still assuming getting everything tight, right? In a recent session we did hand claps and I found it sounded best when they were layered about 4 deep but quite precise timewise.
