    Why NOT the VF80?

if you aren't constructing drum tracks then yep - the VF80 will do what you want it for and it is good value. If I had my time again I may have gone the computer route....but thats because I'm into rock music and need to create drum tracks etc. which I will now invest in a PC for. For basic...

    Noise and the Fostex VF160

but there is also the argument that if you are recording something really beautiful, and have a great sounding room, you wouldnt use a noise gate at all. Placing a noise gate in the chain kind of states that what you are recording in - or using - is in some way inferior. The logic is I...

    mr-8 or vf80 or ?

the main differences are that the VF80 records onto a hard disk giving you many hours of track time, and the mr8 uses compact flash cards which only allow small amounts of track time. The mr8 however is designed to be used in conjunction with a computer to allow easy transfer of files for...

"Viva Bajo" =To Live Bass (new song)

clif I really enjoyed this! Excellent playing and dynamics throughout. You did this on the MR8?....very cool The only thing I noticed was some slight timing issues during one of the quieter passages with rhythm guitar. Great stuff!

A little help from my friends...

Garry nice clean sound you're getting there, I listened to Parcel and Change your mind back. Your partner's voice is very smooth, if a touch too smooth sometimes. I was hoping she would add a little growl or something to spice it up. That said, the type of music you have chosen to write...

    VF80 vs. VF160

the vf80 can import and export .wav files (as long as you buy the one with the built in cd/rw drive all you need to do is make sure you record your song at the same tempo as the .wav file then its just a matter of cutting and pasting having said all that...;-) a computer beats either of these...

    replacing a VF-16 hard drive......

spew! have you tried mucking with the leads that connect to the drive? My VF80 did the same thing once, said it couldnt find the drive, and I took the back plate off and fiddled with the leads and it worked ok again after that. I have a friend with a VF16 who has swapped the 5 gig hard drive...

    Vf 80 And Compressor

Rob yes, the trim levels if you are using an external pre-amp would be on zero or close to. You do have to crank the VF80's internal preamp quite a bit both with condensers and dynamics, if you are not using an external mic pre. It would have been very gracious of Fostex if they could have...

    uber n00b question

hey trim does your synth have a headphone output? You can get a plug that converts the headphone output into 2 x 1/4" guitar cables that will go straight into the 2 channels on your MR8 (I assume the MR8 has got 2 recording channels? I must admit I havent even checked... :) I have tried...

    Fostex on making CD's

you can make an audio CD with the one track you wish to convert. You simply take that to your PC, and "rip" it to mp3. You have to select the right "bit rate" - usually 128kb variable sounds ok. You dont have to save it as a .wav file. There is a free program called dbPoweramp that will...

    uber n00b question

you need a 1/4" cable (guitar cable). If you have left and right outputs on your synth, you would connect them up to channel 1 and 2 of the unbal/hi Z inputs on the mr8

    vf80 virtual tracks??

I should add: the best method for you would be to bounce tracks 1-6 down to tracks 7-8 (as it seems you already know how to do). Then I'd save that mix - by pressing "scene". Call it mix 1 or something. Then, you can say swap tracks 7-8 with tracks 9-10....and then you will have 2 empty...

    vf80 virtual tracks??

I suggest you "read your manual" ... this is a fairly basic operation. However, it is simply a matter of pressing "setup", and selecting "exchange" (track exchange). You then tell the machine which tracks you want to exchange. Unfortunately you cannot copy from track to track though.

    scrubbing

some things I have scrubbed around and then erased are stuff like the singer accidentally sneezing or coughing, or an obvious mistake like oversinging something or playing in a quiet spot when you're not supposed to be. I have found the best way to get on top of this is to just use the machine...

Questions about using MR-8 with laptop

I have used a Toshiba Satellite Pro laptop for the last couple of years for work and home purposes. I give it an absolute thrashing, and I must say, I am pretty impressed with it's reliability. I get the occasional hangup or stall, but in the main, it is a flawless performer. Even with all...

    scrubbing

I thought the Fostex manual was actually quite an easy read, and not "stupid" at all? Applying a noise gate can be an effective process, when listening to audio, to maintain silence between the audio. Dolby noise reduction is not normally used on digital recorders because they have no...

    VF80 to computer

you need to understand your fostex before anything else! How will you expect to convert your music to mp3 if you dont even take the time to work out how your principle recording equipment works? read your fostex manual....it really isnt that hard. learn how to: 1. mix down your tracks to a...
