Yeah, the 1680 has a built in compressor. It's not the greatest but it will get the job done... There are also a few multi effects that have a compressor in the effects chain, like the vocal multi.

Just a note... The "Work Made For Hire" agreement does not apply to sound recordings. The reason for this is because the work was not performed in a "work enviroment" and the song writer does not have the authority to order the musicians to perform another song. This places sound recordings...

Is this debate really about lo-fi v. hi-fi or is it a debate about what style of music people prefer? I personally love a lot of lo-fi recordings because the bands that are making these records are the ones I prefer to hear. Bands like Sebadoh, Slint, Pavement...they all have a really raw...

I'd go with the sm81. I've used both and I find the 81 gives a more clear sound than the 57, on hi-hats.

Just a thought... You can go to your local book store and pick up a book on basic recording techniques. This may not make you an instant pro but, at least, it might answer some of your questions. Getting started is the hardest part... so get out there and search for some answers.
