You didn't put the m.i.d.i standard though. You can transmit m.i.d.i. over a LAN connection from one computer to another increasing the distance that m.i.d.i. is transmitted

midi spec 1.0 suggests 15 metres maximum length.

Check the midi sample rate of your sound card and the sample rate of your software. Clicks and pops that sound like static occur when sample rates between software and hardware do not matched. This should alleviate the problem.:)
