    recommended monitors?

Every modern monitor that I know of uses 1/4" jack inputs and/or xlr. I'm not aware of any using rca ins.

Welcome back. That's a long time to be gone.

Recording Guitar and vocals at the same time

I prefer to play and sing at the same time. Most times I use a fig.8 on the guitar with the null directed toward my head. I either sing into a dynamic or another fig.8 with the null pointed toward the guitar. Works quite well for me. Using any cardiod condensers makes it difficult.

    Party time with the firepod!!

Yeah, you'll be fine. And yes, blue light kind of on.

    Party time with the firepod!!

My firepod has been on almost constantly for 4-5 years now. The speakers should be no problem either.

    Which vocal/guitar mic?

In that price range I like the Mxl V67G as Richard mentioned.

    Shure KSM44, AKG C414 B-XLS or B-XLII, Rode NT 2000, AT4050, Rode K2,

See, I told you you couldn't go wrong. Congratulations on both mics. I'm sure they'll both serve you well.

    M-Audio DMP3 mic pre advice

I don't see why this is an issue. It's an interface with built in pre's. If I were looking for a cheap preamp I would consider an interface if lots of people could vouch for the pre's. I have no problem with Darrin recommending it. He obviously believes in it. Matter of fact, if I get a chance...

    M-Audio DMP3 mic pre advice

The thing is that it's hard to find anyone cutting on the DMP3. It gets almost universal praise from lowenders. The only people I hear cut it are people using high end pre's. You're the first I've seen cutting on it who had emulations of high end pre's. The truth is, I haven't heard much about...

I can't use a condenser mic for vocal because my room is bad

The argument will be made that it's not about ambient noise but "room reflections". I'm not sure if/how this would differ but that's the angle that's always used. I've never bought into the thought entirely and have expressed that prior to this thread. However, even I tend to think my ugly room...

    M-Audio DMP3 mic pre advice

I think the DMP3 is kind of a no-brainer at this price point. I say get it and don't look back.

    Shure KSM44, AKG C414 B-XLS or B-XLII, Rode NT 2000, AT4050, Rode K2,

I also own the sputnik and while I like it quite a lot I wouldn't call it as versatile as the others. It seems your getting some kind of consensus from the last several posts. Also I wouldn't take Ronans opinion lightly. Weasel may be onto it with buying the cheapest one. You really can't go...

    Shure KSM44, AKG C414 B-XLS or B-XLII, Rode NT 2000, AT4050, Rode K2,

I own both the c414b uls and the Ksm44. I've also used the K2. If I were to only keep one then it would have to be the Shure. I mostly record acoustic instuments and vocals with some electric guitar and hand percussion so I've tried neither on drums. For my purposes I find the Ksm most usable (I...

    MXL v67g and v69

I own a v67 and once auditioned a v69me. They sound similar although one is tube and the other is not. I actually prefer the v67 although both are good mics. The v67 is pretty good all around also. Does decent acoustic guitar and hand percussion. If I had known when I started, I don't know if I...

    Shure KSM27 or.....

I agree with David on this. I've owned a 27 for a long time and although I don't love it on vocals I find it a very good "all around" mic. It does very well on acoustic instruments. I don't use mine tons nowadays but I've got a lot more and more expensive mics since. However, if you took them...

    Soooooo Close To Recording!

I have a firepod and 2 Ms1b's. I leave the Ms1b's hooked up to the line in's on channels 1&2. The firepod pre's only have 54 db of gain and even at that they get noisy past about 3 o'clock position. I bought the Rane's because they have 66db of gain. On condenser mics there isn't much difference...

There can be a plate covering the switches. Take the 4 screws out of the plate to reveal the switches.

few Questions on the mxl 603/604

I have the 604's and use & like them for acoustic guitar. Unlike Mr. Joly though, I find the rolloff very useful on this mic as it can get a little boomy on my Guild D25 set flat. These get very mixed reviews but I find them to be pretty good mics. I also play fingerstyle. The recording vocals...

Richard, I always enjoy reading your posts and I think you have an EXCELLENT attitude. You take more time and have a little more patience with noobs than most people on these boards. You also seem to genuinely be a nice guy. I was trying to leave you reputation but wasn't allowed so I thought...

    What's limiting YOUR recordings??

I definitely voted for my own ability. My gear and my room are good enough to make decent enough recordings. I find myself mostly fighting my own laziness and lack of musical ability. I do find myself improving over time but at a much slower pace than I dreamed of when I started all this.
