I prefer to play and sing at the same time. Most times I use a fig.8 on the guitar with the null directed toward my head. I either sing into a dynamic or another fig.8 with the null pointed toward the guitar. Works quite well for me. Using any cardiod condensers makes it difficult.

I have a firepod and 2 Ms1b's. I leave the Ms1b's hooked up to the line in's on channels 1&2. The firepod pre's only have 54 db of gain and even at that they get noisy past about 3 o'clock position. There can be a plate covering the switches. Take the 4 screws out of the plate to reveal the switches.

I definitely voted for my own ability. My gear and my room are good enough to make decent enough recordings. I find myself mostly fighting my own laziness and lack of musical ability. I do find myself improving over time but at a much slower pace than I dreamed of when I started all this.
