    Sansamp BassDriver DI

So many factors, like the instrument, amp, whether or not you're using it through the PA at the same time or independently. Few, if any, suggestions are going to be worth bothering with. I had the sans guitar version for a while, and it was very easy to dial in sounds.

tips on recording acoustic guitar through pickup

WI'd choose a pickup/EQ combination over a mic/screaming kid any day, especially if it's just 'sketching,' which was the point of the post in the first place. Oatmeal? Naah.

    Masterlink Rendering

Even after rendering a playlist (for Red Book creation), you can still access the original unrendered playlist (the '17th playlist' you mentioned), which allows you to further add songs. Furthermore, if you name the songs in a playlist, it's fairly easy to go into the files and pull them out...

    How would you mic this?

For the scenario you mention, either Daisy's suggestion (just a small stereo recorder set up near you with a decent condenser mic), or DI the guitars and close mic your singing (2 mics, 4 channels total; a little bit of mixing and you'll have a more than adequate sound for simple evaluation...

    ES-57 and plug-in power?

No blocking capacitor in any dynamic I know - it's not the mic that needs protecting, it's whatever's supplying the phantom power that might get damaged. When you say 'a jack with plug power' are you refering to a mini-jack with 'plug-in power,' such as you'll find on an MD Walkman or something?

    ADAT Tape static problem

I wonder if there actually is some tape damage, but you haven't wound the tape far enough (one way or the other) to be able to find it. Just stopping the tape at the problem point and ejecting the tape will spool up the damaged area of the tape back into the housing again, where it can't be seen.

I agree. Certainly beats garbage collecting or waiting tables, that's for sure!

    Point taken. Sorry.

    TRS to TS 1/4" How?

Yeah, but none of the desks you mention 'off the top of your head' are anywhere near what a newbie would be using, probably not even an 0V1 (as for the others, forget it). That's what was bothering me.

    Killing My Valentine

Great performances for the style. Good comment earlier about the vox/b'ing vox needing a bit of differentiation; my thoughts exactly. I'm listening on earbuds, so things could be skewed this end balance-wise, but I found myself focusing on the guitars more than the vocals, which can't be a good...

    monitor port design -Harvey?

I think you're going to have to change either the proposed title of the book, or the author.

    monitor port design -Harvey?

Or as the late, great Roy Scheider might have said: "You're gonna need a bigger shelf."

    Stereo or mono foldback?

That makes good sense. And in performance mode, I'm sure a singer isn't pareticularly listening for a nice stereo spread (which could even be distracting). That said, when recording backing vocals, a singer I know likes the previous vocal take(s) over to one or other side slightly and the take...

    20's/30's vibe

Since the sound is primarily a product of limited (and uneven) freq response and mild distortion, some radical EQ and a little preamp drive 'grit' would emulate it pretty closely. Or, you could even try using your headphones as a mic, although that could quite easily sound bloody aweful (more...

    TRS to TS 1/4" How?

There's something about the above statement that bothers me. I can't think of a single recording machine (a newbie would be using) that has mic/line switchable XLR inputs. In all but extreme circumstances, a decent 1/4 TS to 1/4 TS unbalanced line cable, as suggested.

You must be having a bad day. Wikipedia has an extensive listing of equipment he's used over the years.

what's the hardest guitar riffs/solos to learn ever?

Pat Metheny: infinitely inventive use of scales, all over the damn shop. I can keep up for about half a bar (on a good day, and on cocaine) only to be left in the dust. Holy cow. All that, and you get to hear him in a department store elevator on the odd occasion! Then there's...

Sgt pepper 4-tracks? Got em? I do...

I uploaded the Pepper tracks, but the quality sucked so much, I got bored after a few minutes. Perhaps because I uploaded them to Reaper, which I'd never used before. It's interesting to listen to the separate tracks though; nothing beyond that, I thought.
