Well THERE'S my problem: Playback issues for large multi-track projects

Yep. I thought I mentioned this. The OS and programs are on an SSD and I have a 3 TB RAID 5 internal SATA array for my data. I record and mix at 96K 32bit (and won't change so no one should try to argue me out of it :)). The amount of cycles lost to a hyperthreaded quad core i7 CPU is...

Can I sing? Or hit a note at least? Torment!

I agree 1000%. What these shows also never mention is that most of the top talent who appear have actually trained for years and have performed extensively, both professionally and semi-professionally. Very, very, very few people are "natural talents." You can be a self-taught musician or...

Can I sing? Or hit a note at least? Torment!

My guess -- it's the Googles.

Well THERE'S my problem: Playback issues for large multi-track projects

I've got a couple of projects that are well over 100 tracks each with lots of VSTs and would choke Audition 3.0, even with the largest ASIO buffer setting, on my quad core 8 gig RAID 5 editing computer. I have a quad core hyperthreaded laptop with 16 gig and an SSD, so I tried the projects on...

Can I sing? Or hit a note at least? Torment!

Okay, you want a serious response? Note that this is the second time in a week that I've written something like this -- there is a search function on HR (and please note that HR stands for "Home Recording"). My area of expertise is musical theater. I don't know anything about "pop" styles...

Are there any instruments that don't go together well ?

Anyone familiar with PDQ Bach? This is his Pervertimento for Bagpipes, Bicycles and Balloons. As with all of PDQ Bach's work, this stands alone as THE example of instruments that do not go well together. Grooveshark - Free Music Streaming, Online Music

    Can I sing?

Okay, I'm going to be brutally honest. First caveat: anyone who isn't tone deaf can learn to sing (and sing well). Second caveat: musical theater is something I know lots about -- I've worked in it professionally, I write for it, and I've been musical director on a number shows. In other...

[DOUBT] Recovering audio recorded with microphone

I agree -- I don't see any signal at all in the "before." Amplify that enough and you get the random noise that's in the "after."

    Budget camera?

No, it doesn't. It lessens some artifacts and noise. The nature of the sensor, the lens and the compression guarantee artifacts and noise. Amateur cameras will ALWAYS produce video that is, from a technical standpoint, amateur quality.

Recording a group conversation in a noisy area: what equipment do I need?

The PZMs I've used don't have low-cut switches. I'm not aware of any microphone (other than a carefully-aimed shotgun) that can isolate voices -- that's something that the human brain does by actively processing lots of different cues. What the PZM (actually "boundary mike" -- PZM is a...

Should i use dual computer monitors?

Not me. Everything sits on an overturned door that I use as a desk. The sound field for my nearfields is just fine.

Should i use dual computer monitors?

I have two monitors on my music station and three on the computer I use for mixing. They're all 1920 x 1200 and the smallest is 24". At each station, one is mounted vertically. As Bobbsy said (hmmm, I seem to write that a lot! :) ), having multiple monitors speeds my workflow enormously.

Why do you "home record" ?

I nominate this for the best answer. :)

Why do you "home record" ?

Absolutely not. For me, recording is part of the composing and orchestrating process. I want the freedom to experiment, to record and record until I get it where I want it, and to be able to say, "Screw this," and start from scratch. My recordings aren't professional quality, nor do they need...

    Are Old Interviews Copyrighted?

Oy. It is the property of whoever owns the copyright in the recording. It is not the property of the interviewee unless, for example, Lennon recited lyrics from one of his songs. It may belong the production company who produced the interview, the network that broadcast it, or some other...

    Are Old Interviews Copyrighted?

Any original expression fixed in a tangible medium is protected by copyright (not, "copyrighted"). Public performance is one of the protected rights under copyright. The license your station pays is through BMI/ASCAP and covers only music. So, yes, it would be infringement of copyright in the...

When Keyboards have L and R outputs, do you use both to record?

It depends on the particular sound. Most everything I record is orchestrated -- I want to determine where in the sound field the instrument will appear. This is a problem, not only with recording audio outs from external analog instruments, but with virtual instruments used within the DAW...

    Budget camera?

No phone is going to produce video as good as the semi-pro and advanced amateur cameras. In addition to the points mentioned by Bobbsy, there are other factors including the size of the sensor, the quality of the lens, the number of sensors (1 versus 3), the minimum lux level, the optical...
