In addition to Cakewalk $Cubbase etc., check out Digital Preformer. It's a mac only program which goes for aruond $500 US, and its made by Mark of the Unicorn.
If I got a mixer for recording (such as Mackie 1604) could I use it for a PA mixer if I got a power amp with it (mainly for practice), or will it blow up?
You basically got it. ADAT, computer, or digital multitrack. They all have their up's and downs. I have a Roland 1680, but I also have experience with ADAT's. For live recording, it is nice to just flip the switch on a mixer, butonce you get to know the 1680, all the controlls are well...
Go from the 1680's aux out's to the effect's in. Then go from the effect's outs to a new track on the 1680. You'll need a RCA to 1/4 inch adapter though. The aux outs basically are your send/return jacks...only differences is you need to send it to a new track.
Welcome to the wonderfull world of recording. I applaud your musical tastes, which are almost identical to mine (Stabbing Westward is the Best!!!) For this type of music, you'll need to do lots of processing, sampling, and be resourceful. Its not the easiest type of music to get down on tape...
Throughout this site, Dragon emphasises the importants of mastering done by the pro's to sound like the pro's. I think he hit the nail on the head pretty well there, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't do it yourself; that's how you learn! You should be able to do some pretty goo quality...
Moniters are ideal because they are completely flat. The speakers you have may, for instance, really enhance the low end. Because of this, you are satisfied with the low end of your recording on your speakers...but then you go and play it in your car. These speakers do not enhance the low end...
guitargarder-Sorry for the slow response. Right now I am between soundcards. I was using A SB Live a friend let me borrow for a while, but I'm looking into either a MOTU card, or Layla. I think Event Electrtonics may be comming out with some cards of their own, so I'm gonna wait and see what...
Hmmm, this post looks farmiliar. OK, I'm gonna give someserious suggestions. I would get aportable DAT for sampling. Then I woulld make sure that you have the best editing and arranging software out there (don't have a specific suggestion on that one). Then how about either a drum machine...
If you wanna be Trent, you gotta have a full studio of gear, and use ut all! Also, you gotta get a portable dat and sample everything from the sound of a car door slamming to bees. You gotta find uses for gear that no one ever intended. That' swhy Trent is who he is!
I've had lots of experience with both a comp. and a 1680. Here are my pro's and cons of each.
Comp. Pro's--- More flexability all around, more expansion options, CD buring is way better then on the VS machines, definatily easier to edit (because you're looking at a large moniter), and you have...
Yes! If your using a cheep mic, your gonna get cheep results. Same goes for your soundcard. As far as software goes, it depends on what you want to do, but there are some links floating around this site. I would suggest you spend a few hours browsing the site, you should find all your...
I agree that Korn's albums are well mixed as far as the heavy stuff goes, but ever see them live? I did, and they sounded kinda muddy...I think its hard to get those 7 strings to come out clear in concert.
Anyway, if anyone's ever listened to Type-O-Negative, I think they do an excellent job...
That;s the problem, I know a fair amount about recording, but don't know anything about electronics. I'm doing a lot of reading about the subjuect so I can learn how to not fry my equipment.
Let's say I'm gonna get Event 20/20's in about a week. Then in about another 2 weeks I'll get a power amp. Can I just use the moniters unpowered for a couple of weeks without power if i keep them low? I would connect them to a VS1680, or I could use a reciever.
YOu can do alot with 8 tracks. Try the mic technique I suggested above. (ooops, forget to mention that you should use close micing so the drums won't bleed into each other). You'll have to experiment with the exact positions, but get a good sound and save eq's for fine tuning. You'll...
I wouldn't go crazy with your first few recordings, cause by the time you are done you'll know what you're doing, and want to go back and do it better. I highly reccomend purchasing one effects card. Anyway...drums. First decide how many tracks you will use on other instruments, add one or...
Don't quote me on this, but I think you can hook up outboard gear through the aux ins and outs. I think you need to bounce in order to record the fx, but I've never tried this, so a second opinion here would be valid. On a side note, I've been pretty satisfied with the noise gates on the...
