use the trim tool on the end of the region before it. Assuming both parts were recorded together, if you use the trim tool you should be able to trim back the other region

not any harder than deciding the single region that you just changed with your "gain plugin" is too loud or too soft. just select all your volume automation and trim it down with the trim tool. Or use the trim automation

IMO, spend the money on decent preamps/converter. You'll over spend on an analog mixer to reach an improvement in quality...especially since you don't really need all the features a mixer will provide you on the front end. Just get 16-18 channels of preamps.

Also, take a look at a 96 I/O (or 96i I/O). Unless you need specific inputs only available on the 192...I don't think the extra sample rate option is worth the extra $2000.
