Finally entering the world of DAW recording.

The interface doesn't know what DAW you'll be recording into, so yeah, it should work with any DAW. You'll just need to make sure your DAW sees the device as it's in/outs, and that it has the right drivers.

    Mixing snare drums

Yep, I send mine to a snare bus and then on the the drum bus. I do the same with two mono overhead mics if they were tracked that way, double tracked guitars panned hard L/R, bass cab+DI, doubled back ground vocals, you name it. It saves a ton of CPU this way, not to mention the head ache of...

    Double kick compression?

First off, I like the whole idea and I get what you're saying. I recently tried a "bus level only to start things off" mix, and liked the drums, but did go back and add extra compression individually. I get the idea of mixing into a compressor in terms of the master bus because I've tried it...

    Double kick compression?

Yeah, this is true, at least in terms of the modern DAW in a digital world. However, and someone please correct me if I'm wrong (Never used a real analog desk for mixing), weren't most desks equipped with a single knob attack/release combo? I mean, there wasn't physical room for multiple knobs...

    Double kick compression?

Thanks Greg. I know they use lots of samples... I like to believe I might get what I'm looking for without, but it's probably time to dive in and try my hand and more sampling/layering I thought multing the rack would give me better results. I'll try that. Really? Rarely compression on the...

    Double kick compression?

Hey friends, quick question for ya.. I listen to a lot of modern metal where there are some pretty intense drums happening, and a few times I've tried to mix a song or two in that style. When it comes to the 'machine gun' crazy fast double kick, I hit a wall in setting up the compressor...

My mixes are always softer than commercial music of the same genre

For comparisons, bring your pro track into the session and turn it down to the level of your mix. Now you can try to match it in terms of sound and style. Don't try to raise your track to it, that will cause a mess, as everyone has pointed out.

Hilarious VSTs, or... WTF? There's a plug for that?!

    Parallel Drum Compression

Using the mix knob does do the same thing as the double bus trick, except as you noticed, you can't EQ it. So, just set up 2 busses. One for the drums, then a second, where you only send the tracks you want the parallel processing on. Ie, the kick, snare, maybe toms, etc.. Now you can EQ that...

DI Guitar Sound > Mic'd Guitar Sound

Hey, and welcome to HR! First, does you amp sound good in the room before recording it? If it doesn't the mics aren't going to make it better, that's for sure. What mics are you using? Why do you need two of them? When using 2 mics, you introduce a phase relationship. Are you getting a more...

Vocal Nirvana...Using Gobo's...Wow is all I Can Say!

I did this myself too. Best $30 ever spent for the "Studio". :thumbs up:

how much mixing to do before recording vocals

I don't use PT, but it's just a matter of soloing each track individually and exporting like you'd export any stereo mix, except one track at a time. And for that matter, I'm sure there's some sort of "batch export" function in PT like there is in Cubase. Just set a new folder up so you know...

Volume envelopes + Compression + Vocals

Yes, by all means use both! Most DAWs have a way to chop the audio into separate regions (chunks) and then raise or lower the "input gain" of those regions. This should all happen before the fader, so that any EQ, compression, fader moves happen after it. This way, you can even out a performance...

Will i turn down the volume??

Even if that's true though, he can rinse and repeat. 5 dB for each track not enough? Try 7, and so on.

Anyone in the Portland, OR / SW Washington area?

I'm out of the country for a while, otherwise I'd probably snatch some of these. I thought I'd share the link in case anyone has a use for em. They're listed as "WENGER SOUND MODULE SYSTEM (10' X 10') SOUNDPROOF ROOM" I haven't done any research about them, but I'm sure a google search will...

when and when not to use parallel compression

You can solve the bleed problem by gating the parallel comp buss before the compressor though. On it's own it will sound quite unnatural, but it can work when mixed in. Plus, in modern metal the goal isn't natural at all, especially with drums.

Is this weird that I like mixing vocals like this?

If you need all that low end, you might as well just sing into the mic from .025 inches away. Even then, I doubt 50hz has much content. I often HP my vox to up around 80 or even higher, and never notice it a mix.

    Newest mix, looking for feedback

Note taken. I'll see what I can do with that. Thanks a lot for the feedback! Thanks for listening! I guess I have to get back in there and make some adjustments. I think instead of turning up the vox, I'm gonna deal with those guitars. I have a tendency to make them too loud in nearly every...
