How do you treat your overheads and why?

My thoughts are this: If I add some fake reverb space to my close mics, they're no longer going to match the room sound of the overheads that yes, obviously have more room sound in them. I mean, sure, I can try to make that fake room sound as close to the OH room sound as possible, but it's...

How do you treat your overheads and why?

Interesting that people aren't liking reverb on the OHs. I send some of the OHs to my main "blend" verb on nearly every mix. I find that if I do that, it makes the whole kit sound more like it was tracked in the same space, even if it wasn't, without too much reverb on the other mics. Also, I...

being a free producer for experience

I might be reiterating some things that have been said but here's my take. If it's not for some good friends who have mutual trust in the situation, most people will treat you like garbage if it's an unpaid situation. However, you have to have something to prove to them that you have some...

Greg's Mixing contest is over. No tracks to download.

Hey Greg, I missed the deadline, but I'm really happy with my track. I know the contest is over, but would you mind if I post it here, or in the MP3 clinic for people's thoughts?

    Mixing from ground zero

The most important thing I learned in the beginning about EQ is to try to cut first to fix a problem. If it sounds muddy, cut the mud, don't try to boost the highs. For a while, I was only cutting and never boosting, but recently I've found that I want to boost from time to time, but like 10%...

Reverbs - how do you use them in a mix?

But depending on the reverb, and computer, that might be a bunch of processing. My machine would choke for sure. A De-esser/eq probably uses less CPU than a reverb in most cases. Just a thought. I bet people aren't using 6 year old computers around here! :o

    Panning

Hmm... physical connection in your chain someplace? Here's a tech support solution you could try before you get too angry. Shut it all off, turn it all back on.

    Panning

It sounds like you have it going through a mono bus. If something goes into a mono bus, it will always be center no matter where you pan in. Make sure any AUX buses, or effect return buses are in stereo, then the pan will work properly. I always make every bus stereo because even if you want...

Looking for advice on most efficient way to learn about Sound Production.

Man, so many people would kill for things like your asking. When I've gone out to find a place to "work for free" at I run into 2 main issues. 1, there aren't enough places and WAY too many fish in the sea. 2, they often don't need someone because point 1, too many fish. Also, I think you...

How Can I Mix a Project Recorded In Protools with Live 9

Yeah, I'd probably look into Boulder's way! My way is a pain in the ass for sure. It's how I had to do it in Cubase before.

How Can I Mix a Project Recorded In Protools with Live 9

Yes, "No processing" means turn OFF any plugins that you might have on a track. EQ, compressor, reverb, anything. When you export a track, you will export the audio as you hear it. So, if there are any plugins, it will "Print" the sound of those plugins too. You want the DRY signal only...

How Can I Mix a Project Recorded In Protools with Live 9

Converting project from one DAW to another like you would like can't be done. At least to my knowledge. Also, having someone do all the dirty work for you is also unlikely. Pro engineers pay assistants money to set up their sessions. Those of us at home just have to bite the bullet. It's not...

Reverb on aux bus is causing mix volume to decrease

I'm not a know it all, but I feel that this is bad advice. Using one bus for one reverb is the way to go. No need to have 3 of the same reverb all over the place. That's confusing and eats up valuable CPU. OP, you're doing it right!

    Buffer Woes

Any suggestions? Yeah, a quite simple one... Commit to the sound of your VI and print to actual audio tracks. No more CPU hungry instruments and all your resources can be used to mix it. The pros often have VI instrument sounds but they don't get the actual VI on a track... That's how they...

    Sitting vocal delays

Thanks for your help guys! There's some good ideas. I have trouble with mono delays. I like them from time to time, but again, i can't get the sound I hear elsewhere. I wonder if maybe I'm just mixing them too loud. Same with the stereo ones. I had an idea just a minute ago that I think I'll...
