    Headphones that amplify outside noises...

I grabbed a pair of AudioTechnica DR-HX100 headphones during recent sale at Guitar Center. It seemed that I can't go wrong paying $30 for a $100 piece of gear. The sound turned out to be OK for the price paid, but there was something that I've never ever experienced before: I put them on...

    help again!!!

You may try to change your BIOS setting to indicate IDE-0 as your first boot choice (assuming that the HDD is on that IDE channel), and see what happens. But before doing that I would suggest that you check the correct Master-Slave-Cable Select settings on your hard and cd drives.

Maybe you should better take a look at soft samplers.

    software compressor quality

I second what Massive Master said: Voxengo makes excellent plugins. Very clean and transparent. Reasonable price too. You can download demos from their website, which are fully functional except for a sound cut-off every 30 seconds, while in demo mode. Check out compressors: Soniformer and...

what audio editor to use to finalize / master / burn CDs?

That is exactly the point. Someone has changed the settings without really knowing, what he was doing. Nero, for example inserts 2 seconds pre-gap by default "for Red Book compliance" purposes. Anyone can let as is, or remove it... And after burning an audio disk it allows a user to print 7 -...

what audio editor to use to finalize / master / burn CDs?

I agree, it is possible to make a non-RB compliant audio CD, but this is not my point. You say that every once in while your clients bring you audio disks, which are not compliant with the RB. How many percent of clients? 10%, 5% or maybe 1%? So majority of people burn audio CDs that are...

what audio editor to use to finalize / master / burn CDs?

Redbook standard CD is just a fancy name for an audio cd.

    Hard Drive/Fan Noise

If you intend to stick to IDE, get yourself Seagate Barracuda IV hard drives. I have three of them in my box, and I practically don't hear them. The noisiest parts of my Antec Sonata case are PSU fan and 120 mm case fan. I am using an excellent Alpha heatsink (for Athlon), which allowed me to...

A warning about using CD and DVD for backups

How can a hard drive go bad after some time of inactivity? Do you have any link to proove that statement? I still have some very old floppies that are usable just fine.

A warning about using CD and DVD for backups

This is surely an important subject. I had a thread on best media for long term storage a week or two ago, and there were some good practical advise given. At the same time I notice how all these articles expressing concern about longevity of CDs and DVD started to pop up in numbers everywhere...

    Sasser Virus

That is why I never regreted having my music pc as a totally stand alone machine not networked to anything at all, and with all Windows network related services disabled.

    Storing wav files on CD's

Winrar can compress files and split large ones into parts of your chosen size, say 700 mb. In theory after unpacking your wav files should not have lost any quality. In real life it is rather computer hungry and long process, especially at high compression setting. Therefore given that your...

What do you use for backup?

What media do you all use for backup? Just read an article that Dutch computer magazine PC Active had done tests on several brands of CD-Rs. They recorded 30 disks of various manufacturers back in 2001 and sealed them in a box. In 2003 they opened the box and tested the disks - 10% could not...

    I can't run my BIOS!!

Usually in the beginning of the boot process there is a short splash screen, which tells you what button to push to get into the BIOS. Usually you should be able to freeze this screen by pressing "Pause" on your keyboard at the right moment.

Antec Sonata case- anyone tried it yet?

Like I said, Sonata's 120mm case fan is reasonably quite. Couple years ago when I was looking for a quite 80mm fan for CPU cooler I checked out Papst fans, but Panaflo turned out to be quiter and cheaper. Panaflo fan with Alfa heatsink - very quite combination.

Antec Sonata case- anyone tried it yet?

It is quite by office standards, but not by soundstudio standards. The noisiest part - power supply fan. 120mm case fan is variable speed, but even at full speed it is reasonably quite. Hard drives are mounted on rubber washers, which helps to damp the sound a lot. I am using three quite...

    Re: RAM...Single stick or two?

Re: bullyhill, a question, please? Overclocking made sense when computers were slow and expensive. These days it is more of a sport, rather then practical necessity. It is a very sensitive issue, which may interefere with overall stability of your system on the hardware level. You are about...
