    Room mics

Nice post, heylow. Very Tape Op! I'm getting a pair of the Octava MK-012s, the cheapies that everyone's always buzzing about around here. Figured I'd try experimenting with those a little as room mics.

    Micing the singer's PA?

Are there other people involved in this project? Are they sane? If so, I'll tell you what ya do. When this guy is taking a leak, or something, you make real exasperated-like to the others guys in the band, like he is a real problem, and he's going to ruin the sound of the recording. Turn them...

    Micing the singer's PA?

I worked with a dude that wanted me to do something similar. He had a bunch of guitar fx pedals (delay, chorus, phaser, etc) that he routed his mic through during live shows. They hung from his belt, and he would hit them for different tunes. Really, he didn't like the sound of his own voice at...

    cabinet miking

Step away from the cabinet! Seriously, for years I followed the advice of every beginners recording book, and close-miked the cabinet with a Shure SM57 at and angle pointed at the cone. I guess it all depends on what you're into, but dude, I hate that freakin' sound! It only took me two years...

Volume and bit rate reduction, software "audio engine"

I have a couple of digital audio questions that have been nagging at me..... 1. I seem to remember reading somewhere that when converting analog to digital, it is preferable to go as hot as possible because lower volumes are actually recorded at a lower bit rate. Is this true, or has Geary's...

    Room mics

Anyone have any experience employing room mics? I prefer an ambient sound over using digital reverb any day, particularly with acoustic instruments and vocals. My living room sounds great, with plaster walls, wood floors, lots of windows, and just enough stuff to damp the sound so that it's not...

    Teac 3340

Hey hottrocker, http://www.stores.ebay.com/store=21843746 Check out this guy's eBay store! I bought an old 4010S that was on the fritz, and I brought it back to life with the Tweak Your Teac manual that he has developed. He also has a lot of photocopied service manuals for them. I use mine...

    Tascam us-122

Anybody know how the latency is with the 122? I've been using a Lexicon Core2 for years with my desktop, and I've finally had it! I'm goin' mobile! I really want to get the 428, but I won't exactly have a whole lot of scratch left after shelling out for a laptop. The 122 looks pretty sweet...

** Already picked mics for home studio...NOW WHAT ABOUT ...**

Electronic Musician did a couple of articles on this. May give you some ideas: http://emusician.com/ar/emusic_build_personal_studio/index.htm http://emusician.com/ar/emusic_studio_without_computerten/index.htm

    Mic Cable Help

I have a Behringer mixer with a similar configuration i.e. 2 XLR inputs which have IMP preamps and a few other channels without preamps. I use outboard preamps on these channels (I have a Presonus BlueTube and an ART TubeMP OPL). That way I plug the XLR into the preamp, and the 1/4" out from...

Drum Mic Packs for Live Play

For less than $250, you could try the triangle technique using two condensers as stereo overheads (the Marshall/MXLs and Oktavas go for beans at Musiciansfriend) to capture most of the kit, and a dynamic as a kick mic.

    wavelab how to's

EQ --> compression --> limiting. Exciters and reverbs help, too, although I'm not really sure where they are supposed to go in the chain. Ozone is a great all-in-one tool, although to my ears the Waves stuff can't be beat, especially in terms of flexibility.

is this a master effect issue?

zook250, I agree with Blue Bear. If you want it to affect everything, then it sounds like a mastering thing, to be done to the two-track final mix. -Hig

    strings samples?

Any recommendations on a good quality sample bank CD of strings/orchestral stuff that doesn't cost an arm AND a leg (actually I'd rather give up the leg, so I could still play my guitar!). I know there are tons of them, but I'm not looking to buy a $500 multigigabyte collection that all of the...

    What's the catch?!?

Been using Cake PA9 with Win98SE (PIII866MHz, 256RAM, 20GB5400HD) for a couple of years now, mostly for audio. Now I'm thinking I should get WinXP (heard it's more efficient and doesn't seize up quite as much), and get in on this low latency WDM, DXi, and real-time audio processing thing that...

    piano and strings

Hey all! I am a guitarist/singer/novice keyboard player. I've been recording audio with my computer with Cool Edit for a couple of years, and I recently purchased the latest version of FruityLoops Full. In FL, I am just getting into using my basic Yamaha PSR-282 to control VSTi and DXi...
