    My first Jazz recording

hmm.... All i really want to say is that I'm really sorry that your first time recording some jazz is on some elevator music. (sorry :o i love jazz, but don't care for %90 of the vocal jazz i hear.) I don't want to go into the music or the group too much. Hard for me to critique this. To...

free-jazz duet. is it digital or memorex?

WARNING! this might make some of you freaks sleepy or irritable. :D This was recorded to ADAT and to 2-track cassette simultaneously. I really like the sound i got on the tape, those saturated cymbals. just lovely. First night with my MXL 603's on the overheads. Sure Beta 52 on the kick, a...

    Problem with shure 57???

some more than others. It may be necessary to put a little tape (try electrical tape) around the mechanism that is spinning to keep that part from vibrating around and putting some buzzes in yer tracks. I've run into it a few times close micing toms.

got a sweet deal on RME digi96/8

yep no A/D on this board, except via expansion boards. The AEB 4/I is $135, the 8 in is $185. The 4/O goes for $155. I wish they just had a 2 in 2 out expansion. no analog i/o isn't an immediate problem for me, my DAW has a Gadget labs 424 so i will be mixingdown and overdubbing...

    clipping with no boosting

ouch! 1 inch is way to close. sheesh! 8" or 9" is close enough. I've have tried closer trying to get more slap and even if the mic wasen't clipping it still sounded shite. I like to mic outside the kick but some of you drummers are just demented! :D what kind of beater are you using? probably...

    recording elec guitar with dig.delay

also.... effects like delay or whatever greatly influence playing dynamics. I'm always playing to the delay, or through it, or around it.. lol. SO ALWAYS track the effect during recording if the effect is a definite part of the sound.

    Doh!

It's alright. I did the exact same thing. I got a pair of 603's and 1 ecm8000. Should have went for a pair of the ecm's, but I was gun shy, not having heard them. Jury's still out on the ecm. Haven't found the perfect use for it. The 603's have been set up since the day I got them as drum...

    two hi hat mic technique?

Your not crazy. These guys are giving you shit cuz they wanna give sombody shit and it might as well be the dumbschmuck talking about two mics on a highhat. Listen to the music. If having some gorgeous hi-hat sound is going to make it so much better then why not experiment a little. Otherwise...

live recording setup with 2 drummers, guitar, bass...

and maybe mandolin and or keys. :D I've got this experimental group going on, jazz/ noise/ rock impov kinda thing, can't really describe it. Usually the instrumentation is Drums, percussion, (congas) guitar, bass. The drummers switch up a lot, and I'm thinking toward getting a second kit down...

remixing some old gems part 2

the first thread was here http://www.homerecording.com/bbs/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76597 this is part 2. unmastered. the songs fade into each other so I'm working on that and getiing a good "mastered" (ahh hmmm .. hacked) track to burn to CD, which I may post for comparison purposes in a few...

    Cheapest Overall setup- semi emergency

I do like camn's suggestions. The question sort of comes down to weather or not you have access to the computer. Unless pops is going to let you cart the computer around, or you can record in the same room or at least near enough the computer to pull it off logistically. Again don't count out a...

    Because I need to............

great stuff. you have a really good voice and a great sense of arrangement. The drums sound a little "tubby" the snare especially, needs a little more snap, the kick a little more punch. The reverb on the snare sounds a little unnatural on the rim shots. wow really nice tune, listening again...

    'My Friend Silence'...my 1.5

I didn't really like the vocal sound on this to much. Seemed overcompressed and overly up-front relative to the music. Like i was listening to the vocal on a pair of headphones and the music was just bleeding through. I want it to feel like the bands playing in the rooom with the vocalist. The...

Best Low-Cost Mic Pre; and some other questions

with your ADAT setup I'd go with a mixer. I use a Mackie. I think it is a good board. The pre's sound way better than my DMP-2, which is like an audio buddy and the precursor to the DMP-3. Soundcraft would be a good choice too, although i don't have any first hand experience with them.
