New N-track install crashes after 3-4 tracks

I've had a heap of dramas with the shareware versions of the Blueline plugins - so many I've given up on them. Everything else seems to run OK though. With the specs you've got, you shouldn't have any problems recording a few tracks. The virtual memory is also known as the pagefile, and is...

    Guitar cable or speaker wire?

Actually, JB is right - it's not a good thing to use speaker cable for amp out if the amp is loud - the line level can get pretty high and the shielded cable can't handle it properly. My experience with shielded lines have only been with small amps. - gaffa

condenser mics w/out phantom power source

The second option is to by a decent preamp that has a phantom power source. It's a bit more expensive, but you get a preamp out of it as well. Again, the ART Dual MP seems to be well loved round here. - gaffa

    Arggg!! HELP! CDR TROUBLE!

Assuming that you've only got one HD, connect the burner and the hard drive to one IDE cable, and the CD-ROM to the second IDE cable. That might fix it, otherwise drop the speed down to 1x (yeah, it sucks, but sometimes at least it works). Also check to see if there is a patch for EZ creater - I...

    $50,000-$100,000 Help!!

Spend 10-15K getting enough gear to build a 'nice' studio (similar to Dom Franco's suggestion), invest 10K so when you've got a better idea what you need, you've got the dough to buy it, and give the rest to charity. That way, you'll feel good about yourself. :) - gaffa

    N-Track File Organization

If you save your project before you record the first track, n-track will name all the track .wav files as <projectname>_X.wav. I'm also fairly sure that it will also put them into the directory that you saved the project into. - gaffa

    Monster Cables And Bollocks

It's nice to know that they're not fooling anybody. I also make my own cables (and amps, speaker bins), cos they end up cheaper, and if I do a decent soldering job, last just as long. I just had to post cos I've never seen BS to that extent on any other site :) - gaffa

    Monster Cables And Bollocks

I've just spent the last three hours reading all about monster cables on their web-site, and I have _never_ read such a load of bollocks in my entire life. They have ~10 patents on various cable "technologies" (and I use that word in the absolute loosest sense), including one called Magnetic...

    cables...

ametth, Yeah, you should be able to change the plugs from 1/4" to XLR or TRS without any problems, although soldering the plugs is a pain in the butt - I never seem to be able to get it right. You might want to make sure that you don't have any shorts b/w the unused centre line and the hot...

    Need equalizer advice. . .

I was cruising around, and found a schematic to a spectrum analyser, so you can build your own, to have and hold and keep for ever and ever and ever :) It's at http://www.ethanwiner.com/spectrum.html - gaffa

    Once again, digital connections

S/PDIF is a coaxial format for digital transmission, which uses a 75ohm cable for transfers. As such, you need to convert the signal to an optical output. If you're feeling a bit adventurous, you might want to consider making your own little connector (cos it would eb a handy thingto have)...

    MIDI ERROR??

Can you post the exact error? Try tracking it down through the various manufacturers -Microsoft has a pretty complete listing of errors generated by its products (and let's just say that it is a VERY BIG list) - gaffa

    Guitar cable or speaker wire?

Jakester As far as I know (and I don't actually own an amp/cab setup - best I've got is a beaten up old 20W practice amp), The shielded cable (guitar type cable) will work without any problems for the line b/w amp and cab. There is no technical reason that I can think of - the volume is based...

Not getting a clean recording on my PC...

Two main points here - don't use the windows sound recorder, and don't use the mic in. The mic in sockets are notoriously crap. Use the line in socket instead. That will solve half you're problems. The other half of you problems will be solved by not using the Windows Sound Recorder. This weak...

How much better are XLR cables?

OK, firstly there are 2 types of 1/4" plug - mono (2 wires) and stereo (3 wires). The stereo plug can also be used to carry balanced signals (in the TRS (tip-ring-sleeve) setup). Guitar jacks are a two line (unbalanced) signal, XLR is a three line (balanced signal). The difference lies in two...

    Guitar cable or speaker wire?

Guitar cable is shielded cable, which means that there is a core (hot) and a shield (common). Speaker cable, and I'm talking about speaker cable that is used for home stereo etc. is paired wires (in a figure 8 formation) and is unshielded. The difference is that signal from a guitar is much...

    Digital connections

Toslink is a type of plug (some sort of square thing) that is attached to a fibreoptic cable for digital connections. I'm assuming here that you've got a portable mindisk (the bigger ones generally on have Toslink, and the portable ones like the Sony MR-Z55 have a combined 3.5mm (1/8") line in...

Balanced vs unbalanced ins & outs (diverging into questions on various sound cards)

Unbalanced lines have two wires - hot and common. Any signal on the hot line (including interference) is what you'll get. The balanced line approach has three lines, hot, cold and common. The hot line carries the signal, the common is the signal return(making the loop required for electricity)...

Dingo There's a crew in Melbourne called Multimedia'n'Music @ http://www.multimedia-music.com.au that sell gadgetlabs, aark and lynx cards, and I've been told that Music Junction is about to launch a full online store in the next month or so that should have a pretty complete range of stuff...
