sure, if i think it needs gating, equalization, and compression. typically, my order is Gate -> EQ -> Compressor.

the Audio Technica AT4040 is a good all-around budget condenser. you may have to eBay one to fit your price range, but it would be worth it.

i totally agree. but hopefully you can see where we're coming from. as the second highest vote getter, it's a little frustrating. the probable winner dropped out of the running a few days ago because he admits that he doesn't really need the preamp. now he's back in so he can try to mod it...but...
the DMP3 is already a great pre because it has high quality caps and quality Burr Brown INA 163 opamps. most of the mods that someone would perform are built into it...that's why i want it.
i voted "other" because you might want to consider a EV RE-20. they are great on kick drums, but they are also great on everything else. i've never been a big fan on mics made specifically for kick drum because they usually have a bizarre built in EQ curve that make them useless on most other...
then yeah, the MOTU 828 is a solid option. but it may be overkill since it's got 10 ins and outs. check out the Echo AudioFire4 if you want to save some cash. i compared the AudioFire2 to the MOTU 828, and i thought the AudioFire converters sounded better (didn't compare the pres since the...

a used MOTU mkII might be nice. it's got two decent pres, PC & Mac compatible, 8 other inputs and outputs, and it can be modded by BLA if you'd like to take it up a notch.
and the Echo AudioFire converters are nice. the AudioFire4 has two built in pres, and it's only $300.
how many total...

the DMP3 is considered very clean. it probably wouldn't add any "warmth" to your signal. but the 12AY7 would be "warm". it's got a couple tubes in there, and it's not a cheap starved-plate design...it's the real deal. i've never heard it personally, but the talk on the net is very good. if you...
just bumping, because we need more votes! most of the existing votes were placed before sunday, so they shouldn't even count, technically. and self-voting accounts for a bunch as well.
so, if you're checking out this thread, please take a minute to read the pleas and vote!
if you're trying to get rid of buzz on a track you've already recorded, and it's consistent buzz, you could try the "phase reversal" trick. copy just buzz to a separate track, then reverse the phase. never had to try this, but some phase cancelation should occur...therefore, knocking down the...
