    No audible distortion.....

It's all in the math... Transparent recording medium = better Tape = better => Tape = transparent recording medium. :listeningmusic: I didn't mean to start a war, just wanted to point out that you are mixing up the term 'clipping' with 'distortion'. Dr. Horst Schlader explains it well in...

    No audible distortion.....

I think you are specifically talking about clipping here since if you heard no audible distortion that means that your recordings would not sound like tape (remember distortion is quite a broad term in that it means ANY change to the original signal). If you are talking specifically about...

Good reel to reel for Tascam M30?

The 80-8 has a more vintage/colored sound that some people prefer compared to the newer Tascam 8 tracks. If everything is working and machine is in 'plug and play' condition (and you can verify/test this) then I think the price is fair and it's worth getting.

    New Psych-Pop (all-analog)

Of course, some digitally recorded music sounds great to me. But what I meant was I doubt anyone can get such an authentic 60s sound recording digitally. The closest 60s/70s sounding record I've heard that was recorded to digital (but using outboard analog processing gear) is the Strokes first...

    New Psych-Pop (all-analog)

I would challenge anyone to try to emulate these recordings digitally, even using the same performers and instruments there are way too many variables in the tape machine and tape formulation and so much distortion/color added to the signal to emulate in 24bits let alone with a plugin algorithm...

How much to set up a reel to reel recording rig?

The transports on those machines I listed are pretty gentle on the tape. I did that exact process with a Tascam 32 and probably recorded over the tape about 30 - 40 times on a 22min tape and there were no issues. That's a good 10+ hours of recording from a $30 tape and I could have kept going...

How much to set up a reel to reel recording rig?

There will always be a delay because when he is singing/playing guitar in the room that will still be delayed with everything else. My recommendation is to get a Tascam 22, 32, 42 or a Fostex E2 - if you are patient, really good ones come up for about $300. It's not really worth buying/getting...

    Debating Analog or Digital

This is the main reason why I removed all digital equipment out of my studio and sold it. Scrolling through endless sub-menu's trying to find out why your click track isn't outputting to your headphones is a total buzz kill. Also, I've had more problems with sound cards and hard drives...

Help me pimp (repaint) my mixers

I've got a couple of Roland SEQ-331's that the previous owner felt the need to repaint. I imagine it had a few scratches and so he decided to freshen it up a bit with a new coat of black paint. Well first of all, he painted over some of the markings under the buttons then on the second unit...

    Wouldn't this be nice!

The buyer must REALLY like The Beatles :D Actually from a commercial standpoint, a pro studio could make their $28K back in a matter of months since I'm sure there are a lot of bands that would want to sound like The Beatles... and not many studios around that still have the J37. If you are...

Running a digital desk in to Tape machine (advice)

Yeah, that's about 2 A/D conversions more than anyone in the Analog forum could possibly get away with. I would suggest skipping the mixdown to tape and just go from digital mixer --> Fostex E16 --> DAW, especially if you don't have a 2 track tape machine.

Running a digital desk in to Tape machine (advice)

Recording to the Fostex through a digital mixer won't sound bad, it will still sound distinctively tape-y. But I ask what is the benefit to you in recording to Mac first then to the tape machine? Is it because you want a smaller set-up when tracking? You probably shouldn't mixdown to the E16...

4 track tape recorder to PC- question regarding panning

Yeah that's the cassette that is slightly varying the speed due to the mechanical nature of the device. If you want all 4 tracks still separate in the computer for editing then you need to get a 4 channel audio interface (records the 4 channels simultaneously rather than just 2 like your stereo...

Flickering sound/volume dropouts... How do I fix this?

Cleaning guides and drop-outs sounds like a tape problem. As well as the tapes suggested above, BASF SM911 and SM468 is really good tape and shouldn't be too expensive on the used market.

Trying to wrap my head around terminology regarding frequency response

I'm not sure if you are being sarcastic or not here... Of course it is in their interest (from a business perspective) to argue that frequencies outside of the hearing range do contribute to the sound as they work with vinyl and SACD, both of which store the extended high frequencies unlike CD...
