Not using reverb is like listening to audio in 2D instead of 3D. Reverb is a vital agent in controlling the perceived depth of one's recordings. I'm no reverb expert, but I find that plate reverbs are pretty impossible to tweak so they sound bad (that goes for most of the vst's of plate reverb...
Asking "What is the 'perfect song'" is like asking, "What is the 'perfect pizza?'" I happen to think Hawaiian pizza is the perfect pizza -- thin crust, not too much oil with a dark, slightly spicy sauce: perfection. I also think Guttermouth has written one or more of the perfect songs. I...
If you can't record reggae guitar you can't record anything. What is so difficult about upstrumming? OK, I'm just yanking your chain. ;) Assuming you do know how to play reggae-style guitar, all you need is a decent guitar and tube amp. No, I take that back -- you can get away with just...
To get awesome-sounding distortion you need: great guitar -> great tube amp -> great speaker cabinet w/ great speakers. There are no shortcuts in getting great distortion, especially when it comes to high gain. I've been there and done that with far too many budget solutions: they never...
I can't stay on key for crap. I cringe at hearing my singing recorded. It sounds so good in my head, but during playback it is pure torture to listen to. What's ironic is that I was actually a great singer as a kid. I blame my chronic off-key issues on years of punk rock. People...
I view mastering as more of a way to get tracks to sound better together than to fix any problems. Granted, some mastering places make good money enhancing (aka fixing) mixes people send in. I can't remember the last time I cut bass during mastering. Wouldn't it be better to fix the bass...
Judging by the few helpful responses I received, it seems that the DBX 160a really is the better compressor when it comes to bass? If the compressor I get needs to excel at one thing, it would need to be bass. The vox will be screaming, rapping, and off-key singing, so I really don't care too...
You certainly can play the Roland drums out of the box, and truth be told, the Roland modules are fun and easy to program compared to the big learning curve even the newest Yamaha modules present when it comes to things like layering. However, the Roland trampoline pads are hardly realistic...
Roland's module sounds are completely digital, that is, they aren't real samples. They might sound good in electronic music, but I would look into vst's or a module that uses real samples like a Yamaha.
How did Jimi Hendrix stay in tune without the Dusk Tiger? That just sounds retarded... Who would want to buy something called a Dusk Tiger? That sounds like a new scent of perfume. This must be a desperation move by Gibson. But if they can get a big name to "endorse" them, I'm sure the Dusk...
You get what you pay for... unless you buy a Carvin. I am a fan of Carvin. The guitars are good, although, I can't say I really like the finishes they offer. What I really like are their amps. The V3 is the best-sounding amp deisigned to handle a wide range of tones on the market today. :D
So far the recommendations are pretty much what I've been looking at. I've heard that the DBX 160a is only a good compressor for rock. I've also heard that the RNC isn't good at bass. Are either of these claims true? If there's one thing I do need a compressor for, it's bass, because I suck...
I've never used an isolation cabinet, but they seem like a brilliant concept. Once I get back to my studio I just won't be able to blast a guitar amp, and then there's all the acoustic problems blasting a guitar amp can have (my studio is a small, acoustically untreated room). However, I hear...
One thing I've always wanted to invest in was a decent compressor, since one has to use digital compression and limiting so much in order to reach "acceptable" loudness levels these days. I would want something that is versatile -- something that can be used on bass drums, snare drums, bass...
The only people I've seen who prefer solid state cleans are a few jazz guitarists and metalheads. Tubes will always be > solid state as well as digital.
This post might come off as a bit argumentative, so I'd like to say beforehand that I'm not trying to offend or start an argument; I'm just stating my point of view on things. So with that in mind, read on. ;)
Brooks Wackerman just pounds ahead? And Josh Freese isn't interesting to listen...
The deepest, fattest, smackiest snare is an all-mahogany snare that is something like 14x7. You need to detune the bottom heads on mahogany snares just a bit in order to get them to really sound good. Problem solved. Oh yeah, use big sticks.
Here are the best drumming albums I've heard (rock drumming, that is):
1. "Guttermouth - Live At The House of Blues"
2. "Hitler Bad, Vandals Good" by The Vandals
3. "Freedumb" and "Free Your Soul and Save my Mind" by Suicidal Tendencies.
Those albums really defined my drumming chops once...
I don't want to darken any of my existing mics, I was hoping to get a mic with a different voicing and/or tonality. I like sm57's, I just want a mic to pair with it that provides a widal tonal palette when used together (panned L and R respectively).
