    vocal mics

Well U2 has done "O.K." by using Shure SM58's or a Beta 58 for Bono. The only hitch is to make them perform their best you usually need a transformer based mic pre, although the Studio Projects VTB-1 and Fmr. Audio RNP (very reputedly) sound good relative to their price points. I suspect the...

    Microphone for R&B/Jazz vocals

Either a new Electro-Voice RE16 (also spelled RE-16), a used RE16, or used RE15. Around $200 new, and good used mics run about $150 or so. It's been a standard voice-over mic for many years, and has been used on many jazz or R&B hit studio vocals. If you wish, I can name some examples of...

    akg c3000b or shure ksm27

The C3000B is harsh on most singers. (yes I owned/sold one!) For someone with a very dark and/or "mumbly" kind of voice:) it could work well. My money then is on the Shure between those two choices.

Solo vocal/acoustic guitar; are Studio Projects B1 mics ok?

Jim, if you have access to a good sounding recording room at home or elsewhere that'll be very beneficial. In that case, you could also consider simply getting one B3 and putting it in omni. That's the way many classic acts (like the Everlys) were recorded. That single microphone would just be...

    EV Cobalt Co9

Depends on your type of voice. On my (bright) voice, a bright mic like this one can easly cause ear bleed.:) The Shure Beta series and the NT1 or NT1-A are also bright. An issue with the Shure's is their fussiness towards which pre you use. I have a M-Audio Duo (like DMP3) and can get good...

    help with mics please

With all due respect to the other member's advice... IMHO you'd be better off using most of the money to get recorded by a good AE in a pro studio. The main practical value of any equipment then can be for songwriting and "routining" the material to prepare for that event. BTW the SM57 is...

    M69TG & M400 (soundstar mkII)

Nice scores Paddy. Your X1, if it's up to specs, will sound like an expensive ribbon BTW. And the M88 on many singers, will rival the "Neumanns" IMHO. Never A/B'd the 441 and M88 directly but... Been said that "you only need a pair of 441's to make a fine sounding album"-as long as you've got...

Mic Choice for Banjo and Male Vocals?

Scott Dorsey at RAP (recordingaudio.pro) has mentioned the Electro-Voice EV 635a as being excellent for banjo IIRC. Also it has very good overall sound for vocals. Best on 1st and 2nd tenor male vocalists (or females) IMHO. 635a's make an excellent tonal counterpoint to a Shure SM57 or SM7 BTW...

    Another Mic Tube Question...

The "inexperienced AE's" referred to in my last post are folks like Mark Plancke. I'd like to be that "inexperienced" too:) The discontinued Rode "Classic' is reputed to be a big sleeper, if you can find one. The new Rode K2 is supposed to outshine the NTK also on many singers. Personally have...

    Audio Technica AE3300

For its intended applications, that's reputed to be quite a fine microphone. IIRC Ty Ford did a review of it on his website, and in any case thinks highly of it. Along with the AE5400, they're both supposed to be "sleepers". The AE3300 has the same capsule as the AT 4033 BTW. Chris P.S...

    Ribbon mic for under $350.00?

Electro-Voice designed a number of microphones, like the RE15 and RE16, to have a very similar sonic character to the RCA 77 ribbon. Haven't checked lately, but new RE16's can probably be had for under $200. In addition a used one (or the discontinued RE15) can be bought used in fine condition...

    Another Mic Tube Question...

FWIW most of the posts written by pro AE's (like at Gearslutz) seem to evaluate the NTK as being pretty harsh sounding, This confirms when I tried one out too. (having a bright voice to begin with didn't help though!) One option would be to ebay your NTK and get something else smooth, like a EV...

best Chinese import condenser for classical guitar

The Studio Projects B1 is reputed to be a good acoustic guitar mic also, plus it should outshine the SD Marshall (relatively) on most vocals. Much less quality control issues than an (non-thoroughly inspected) Oktava, per respected AE's, like Scott Dorsey. Although IF the Oktava is a "good"...

Best Mic Pre for the money?

If you define your objective, you'll get better advice. For example, if your primary application is for practice, rehearsal, songwriting, etc., "best" becomes less critical. IMHO anything below an artist demo, or song demo (to be plugged to a publisher) fits into this parameter. Assuming the...

    Is it Noy-man or New-man?

It's only because of their cost. Like how Rodeo (Ro-day-o) Drive, in Beverly Hills, would be pronounced "rodeo" in a less affluent city. Chris

    M69TG & M400 (soundstar mkII)

For 'bright" voices (like mine) the M400 tends to work better than the other two IMHO. Chris

Best microphone under $200 to sing "Merry Christmas" into?

Just wanted to wish my fellow "irregular" members of this forum Peace and Goodwill this Holiday Season. And if Santa gives you any microphones worth telling us about feel free...:) Ho Ho Ho Chris

    The eternal SM57...

Guess it's up to me then to straighten this out... Per many AE's the "Made In USA" Unidyne III's (including SM57 & 545) were more consistant in how they sounded compared to one another. So if a source responded well to one if you had to use ANOTHER one it would have a more predictable result...

Oktava is coming back to the US

IMHO you either be "selective" ala The Sound Room, or be very easy going, as far as returns (at a lower price point), due to their erratic QC. Many of the Oktavas have sub-standard soldering issues, different parts, etc. per Scott Dorsey at RAP. Chris
