    Fifty dollar mics poll

Not anything definitive, but... Some fave live stuff I've seen lately through you-tube was Eric Burdon singing into a RE15 (Spill The Wine), and various 70's videos of Paul Rodgers and Ian Anderson using an SM57. Would be happy with either even on a "studio release" as they seem to work great...

Help me buy a new vocal mic!

Just to add... Make sure to try the SM57 and EV 635a out. FWIW I'm one of "those" singers where the '57 beats out some uber-expensive LDC's, and you may be too. The 635a tends to be excellent for 1st/2nd tenor voice males IMHO. Chris

Help me buy a new vocal mic!

Another vocal mic that works for most is the EV RE15 (or RE16). BTW EV made the RE20 much "larger" deliberately to compete against the Neuman U87 in the broadcasting industry. They are comparable IMHO for most vocals. The RE20 is a bit cleaner on the top, whereas the RE15 sounds more bluesy to...

One mic to meet all my needs?

Wonder if the MXL Mic Mate for USB that has phantom, which works on condensers and dynamics, would be another good idea. They offer a free 2 track recording program with it on their website. Costs less than the Mobile Pre and you don't need to screw around with "drivers" for the computer. Just...

New mic suggestions for our band?

IMHO "go analog" by at least mixing down to an analog 2 track. Better still record to an 8 (or 16) track reel to reel then transfer it into digital for editing, etc. Also you might be able to adjust you mic placement to darken tones... Chris

Are cheap type II cassettes o.k. for a portastudio?

Thanks Reel, figured you'd come through on this. Have a Happy New Year (and everyone else)! Better get to sleep now... Chris

Are cheap type II cassettes o.k. for a portastudio?

Just wondered if the "60 cent per blank type II CrO2 cassette" are fine to use in a cassette multitracker? Versus TDK for example. Especially now that manufacturers seem to be phasing cassettes out. Thanks, Chris

    Shure SM7b

Good alternates IMHO would be getting either a Beyer Soundstar MKII (also called M400 or model 400), or the SM58 modded ($200) at www.mercenaryaudio.com The 58 mod already has a reputation of getting closer to the SM7 sound per some pro engineers. The Beyer is similar IMHO due to personal...

Cheap "Entry-Level" Pro Quality Recording Chain

The SM7 tends to need a bit more tweaking IMHO compared to the Soundstar MKII, as it is "thicker" sounding-still love both mics though... The Studio Projects T3 BTW can be a great vocal mic too. Chris

    SM58 + Preamp?

Hi mshilarious. I'm flattered you remember me-thanks! Planning to attempt some pro singing work ala demos/local stuff next year, so I'll try to stop by here again at least now and then. My friends are "pressuring" me to do more as my voice has improved substantially over the last 6 months...

    SM58 + Preamp?

I think the Mic Mate is an excellent option. BTW if you "eat" (sing close) to the SM58 it will improve the signal to noise ratio for the better. Then you could cut the low end frequencies via EQing to have a cleaner tone later. Chris P.S. I'm a bit biased towards the SM58 (or SM57) being one...

searching for the "warm vocal sound"---

Also Electro-Voice RE20, Sennheiser MD421, or Studio Projects T3 IMHO. If smooth and natural is O.K. too, consider an EV RE15. Not as thick sounding as a RE20, which is more "tubish" in tone. Chris

    Neumann U87 / U47 copies?

Remember. I posted "you can get similar tone..." Meaning if you have the experience knowing what sound (ala U87) you're aiming for, and the AE chops-then it will be pretty close. For example, many vocals were cut with a RCA 77 ribbon, then the high end EQ was boosted with a Pultec="sounds just...

    Neumann U87 / U47 copies?

Per Bob Ohlsson. a world class AE, you can get a similar tone to the U87 out of a Beyer M88 dynamic microphone. IMHO I thought the M88 had a brighter top end, so it would need to be EQ'd somewhat to get it closer. As far CLOSELY matching a real U47 or U87, buying another manufacturer's attempt...

    Best Condenser Mic Around $500?

Like Harvey Gerst, I'm a fan of the Studio Projects T3. Chris

    Mics Without Sibilance Issues

Within the Studio Projects line, the T3 and B1 worked the best on me. Add the Electro-Voice RE15 and RE20 to your short list also. With proper placement, the 'ol SM57 can give good results too when combined with a nice pre like a Joe Meek 3Q, Studio Projects VTB-1, or M-Audio DMP3 IMHO. Chris

Warm vocal microphone for recording on PC?

Consider one of the following Electro-Voice dynamic mics... RE15 RE16 RE18 These are known to sound similar to a RCA 77 ribbon (EV designed them that way!). BTW they can also be spelled RE-15 (etc.), "EV", or "Electrovoice" when scanning for them at ebay. If you get lucky, they can be scored...
