We've Got A New "King Of The Low End" LDC...

AFAIK the capsules of the AT 2035 and the AT 3035 are similar. The 3035 was made in Japan, however, vs. China for the 2035. Haven't tried the AT2035 or AT3035 yet. Besides the Studio Projects CS series, along with the T3, particularly like the B1 (flatter MKII) that's in the same price range...

We've Got A New "King Of The Low End" LDC...

BIG + 1 regarding the Studio Projects CS series on vocals (haven't tried the 2003a yet). Thought the AT 2020 is pretty nice, though not in the same ballpark. Chris

We've Got A New "King Of The Low End" LDC...

Here's my solution for all this... A trip to the karaoke bar, along with free beer, and free pizza. Most any dispute then usually dissipates accordingly. (Mic modder arm wrestling contest optional) How about a rousing rendition of everyone here belting out "Everthing Is Beautiful In Its Own...

O.K. boys, "No more fighting in the War Room!" ("Dr.Strangelove", or "How I stopped fearing cheap modded microphones and learned to love them") :) This keeps up I'm gettin' out the popcorn... Chris

Sorry Harvey for assuming that, but if you flip the second 6 upside down on a 960, it's a 990. Chris

We've Got A New "King Of The Low End" LDC...

FWIW Harvey, and Bob Ohlsson, former Motown AE/still very active in Nashville, are the 2 biggest influences on me in regard to vocal microphone evaluation. Don't mean to derail this thread much, but Harvey what kind of voices does the infamous MXL 990 condenser sound good on? For kicks got one...

    Best condenser mic for $200-250?

Sorry, meant the cardiod pattern CS1. Easy to get them confused. Sang through the CS5 (multi-pattern), for a prolonged period, some years ago at the Anaheim NAAM Show. It was set in the cardiod pattern, meaning as in the CS1. Chris

    Best condenser mic for $200-250?

Hmm... Going to defer the advice to some posts by a world class AE, Bob Ohlsson. Bob has stated one valid way to go would be to get a Shure SM57, partly because it works so well in "ducking"-lessening poor room tone, and also getting a credible representation of someone's voice. Another of...

"wet silk being ripped" could actually be a positive comment, if it's anything like visiting a supermodel pool party!:) Chris

    Best condenser mic for $200-250?

How does the room you're recording in sound? The condenser choices (so far) are most likely going to pick up background noise. You may want to consider learning how to do some simple acoustical treatments, if you want a sensitive condenser. FWIW my favorite condenser at $250 would be a Studio...

    Heads up-Shure SM48's @ GC $30 sale

+1 on the "switch" live issue personally. Have a Shure 548 w/switch, and it's my favorite Unidyne owned, but would use it only for home or project studio recording. Been playing around since with the SM48, and really am liking it. Seems suited for midrangy/warm toned type singers. If you want...

    Heads up-Shure SM48's @ GC $30 sale

Happy to help guys. No on/off switch on my SM48. What's funny is because the efective frequency response is "just" to 14 KHz, versus 15 KHz for 57/58, don't have to EQ out so much of the presence peak. Although IMHO have a good voice, it's prone to some sssssibilance (meant to put above wink...

    Heads up-Shure SM48's @ GC $30 sale

Got a SM48 at Guitar Center during the Labor Day Sale for about $30. Slightly less clean sounding than a SM58, and less "hot" in signal output. But for about a 1/3 of what a new '58 goes for. Great IMHO though for karaoke, cash strapped singers, and kids (who usually have more spending $$...

Which Microphone for medium - high pitched male voice?

    Budget $$$$$? Chris

    Best Microphone for $300-400???

IMHO this would be one good plan... 1) Get a Primacoustic "Voxguard" ($100) to reduce negative acoustics "heard" by any microphone. 2) Also obtain the relatively new FETHead ($100), that'll reduce the mic pre gain needed for step #3 below, in order to help avoid audible pre noise. 3)...

    Vintech or Universal Audio???

I've tried the UA before with the Shure SM57 for vocals and loved it. (haven't tried Vintech) The manager at this Guitar Center said "the 57 isn't a good vocal mic"-until he heard how good that chain sounds on me. It was fun also to turn the dial past the sweet spot into tube overdose! But...

We've Got A New "King Of The Low End" LDC...

I tend to hang out more at GS but wanted to check out the "action" on this thread. Anyway... Remember when the late, great mic modder Stephen Paul used to visit, and was surprised/saddened by the occasional inappropriate remark by fellow HR members. Alan Hyatt (Studio Projects) and Harvey...

    SP T3, SP CS5, or Kel HM2-D

Never actually owned either the T3 or a CS series, but both are VERY fine vocal microphones IMHO (tried them at NAMM some years back). Haven't tried the Kel. I had a cold that day, so that might have been a factor on the CS edging the T3 out that day-had thought the year before (with a less...

    What band\artist influences your vocals?

Been influenced by tons, but currently having a blast practicing vocals along with 'ol Wilson "Wicked" Pickett recordings. Although he was a rangey tenor, and my voice is somewhat lower in pitch (high baritone), his style is absolutely terrific for soul stuff. Plus he (and James Brown) had the...

    DEAL ALERT:Studio Projects CS1 $149.99

I tried (sang) through a CS5 (in cardiod) at NAMM last year and was VERY impressed. Am a high baritone FWIW. It edged out the T3 (although IMHO it's an excellent vocal mic too) YMMV on that though. Seems like a great deal to me anyway... Chris
