    EV RE15 vs RE20

Due to the "variable-D" feature that the RE15/16 have, they don't produce le proximity effect as standard cardiod mics do (like SM57)=less bass response. So you can't fill in as much low end, for example, on a "thin" sounding singer. This turns out to be an advantage however, on the following...

    EV RE15 vs RE20

Thanks hognogger. This EV info is mainly based, however, upon study of a certain world class AE's postings (Bob Ohlsson). Chris

    EV RE15 vs RE20

The RE15 (and RE16) have a certain "vibe" on vocals, like the RE20 has in its own way. Difference in top end on these two equate to the RE15 sounding like a quality ribbon mic, and the RE20 sounding more like a "tube" LDC. This was EV's conceptual direction in creating both these series...

    Studio Projects or Shure?

With all due respect to Fova's otherwise excellent post... The Shure Beta series is MUCH brighter than the "SM" series! They only share a similar model #, NOT the family sound you'll hear in the previously mentioned 545 series, let alone a SM7. Although the older "Made In USA" Shure Unidynes...

    Studio Projects or Shure?

A good way to go is to get both, and record with them at the same time IMHO. You can "eat" the SM57 to add fullness, then use the B1 for high end detail. Just leave enough space between them to avoid "phasing". Chris

Best Value Mic(s) for Recording Male Vocals/Martin Acoustics

Although I'm not familiar with the third singing book, the other two are excellent IMHO. Another good thing too add, if feasible, would be to join the local barbershop harmony chapter. Inexpensive and more importantly you'd get free coaching, along with the opportunity to sing in front of others...

If you had to, could you produce a solid recording with a single $100 mic?

Steve, as you may know, in the book "Glory Days" the detailed story behind "Nebraska" is pretty amazing. They also tried to cut the album on 2" with the E Street Band hot off the road, but they weren't satisfied compared to the "mix" cassette that Bruce kept for a week in his shirt pocket...

If you had to, could you produce a solid recording with a single $100 mic?

Slipperman's recording mentor recorded the entire drum kit, including overheads(!), with SM57's and says that record still sounds great FWIW. Bruce Springsteen+acoustic guitar+Tascam 144 cassette 4 track+ 2 SM57's ="Nebraska". :) Mixed down through a boombox BTW! Over 2 million copies sold...

    MXL 990 vs SP B1

Thanks for the kind words Paddy. FWIW the B1 could be used for a commerical release recording of my vocals pretty easily. Although it's a bright voice, the top end doesn't become edgy/harsh. It has a useful characteristic of "presence", kind of like a SM57. Hence I think it would sound cool on...

    AT 3035 or Rode NT1?

IMHO a smart way to go would be to get one or two multi-pattern condensers. Then you'd have much more flexibility with different patterns. Chris

Recording a 6 person vocal group

Glad to help. Remembered an old trick... Your chances of recording the vocal well (without keyboardist) will go up substantially if the player makes a recording of their part for the family to practice with when the player isn't there. On their own time before showing up. Also there's a...

Recommended Mikes for My Voice - Newbie

tee, those mic choices are all good to try. Be careful with any Oktava though, as in the past their QC hasn't been reliable. Unless you buy from www.oktava.com Even if the mic works now, it may not in a couple of years due to a variety of manufacturing issues. IMHO the best "coloration" is...

Recording a 6 person vocal group

Being a "group singer" myself, can tell you that ensemble singers ALWAYS sound better without headphones. Couple of questions... 1) Does "keyboard player" mean they're using a electric keyboard? 2) Are the singers good enough to track their vocals BEFORE you record the keyboard...

    Now an official SM57 hater

mshilarious, as Treeline pointed out, a nice pre like a DMP3 can make a '57 sound "good". When I tried the Joe Meek 3Q, thought it was superior to the DMP3 (smoother/more detailed mid-range), on a LDC. Didn't have a chance to evaluate it, however, on a dynamic mic. ("only" a singer here BTW)...

    Now an official SM57 hater

FWIW there are top class AE's, like Tony Visconti, who use SM57's all the time on toms. Another strong AE who posts at Gearslutz (Slipperman), told a story about his mentor using ALL SM57's on a kit-including overheads (gasp). And he said that record still sounds great today. Seems to be just an...

Microphones and Cassette Multi-Tracks (488 mkII): Will Better Mics Be Noticeable ??

Agree with Reel (hello BTW!:)), we ain't recording grand opera. IMHO once we're talking non-classical type music, where accuracy is there is paramount, all bets are off. Even in the highest level commercial studios they've used cassette recorders of some type or another for a certain "sound"...

Microphones and Cassette Multi-Tracks (488 mkII): Will Better Mics Be Noticeable ??

Josh, any two different mic models will sound "different" on cassette. If you mean which is "better", that'll depend on your voice and the specific song. A $100 Studio Projects B1 works better, for example, on me than a $300 (or so) AT 4033. That doesn't mean that the 4033 won't sound excellent...

    Microphone for R&B/Jazz vocals

Only because you're recording different performers, go for the EV. The "variable-D" feature helps an inexperienced studio singer (like me!) to not have to be so concerned about working the mic due to proximity effect. In fact, a world class AE (Bob Ohlsson) posted about how recently a RE16...
