    DIY speaker cabinets...?

If you're just trying to build a stage monitor like you said then I'm not sure it's going to be a savings building it yourself. You can get a cheap one for around $50, like this: http://www.musiciansfriend.com/srs7/sid=040520200833004014233119119890/g=home/search/detail/base_pid/630540X/ or...

    The standared for buget monitars....

Like others have said, it all depends on what you mean by "budget." That said, using my definition (meaning < $300 and "active," meaning you don't also have to buy a separate amplifier) I'd say it'd be the M-audio BX-5's. You can sometimes get a pair of "blemished" ones at musiciansfriend.com...

    DIY speaker cabinets...?

I've been looking for some info on this stuff too, particularly concerning building guitar cabs. There most helpful site I've come across so far is www.diyaudio.com It's the do-it-yourself audio forum, and has a couple of threads on these topics. I still don't have a good handle on the theory...

    my humble abode

It's a Bad Cat Mini Cat...it rocks!!! I LOVE the DMP-3 too. It made a huge difference when I added it to my signal chain. I'd definitely recommend the Agile LP copies...go to www.rondomusic.com There are also a few pictures on this guy's site if you scroll down...

    Monitoring and headphones...

For cheap active monitors it's hard to go wrong with M-Audio. You can get a pair of the BX-5 monitors for $299, or if you luck out you can get a "scratch and dent" pair from musiciansfriend.com for maybe $240 or so. I think they're better than the Behringer Truths.

Please take a listen to this

Cool song! Are you still looking for someone to do the vocals? I think it'd be a fun project! I could try recording the vocals here while listening to your recording. What about something like, "I get the feeling you don't like me all that much" for that first line? It's less awkward, but...

    Samson c02 anyone have these?

I was thinking about getting a pair of these last year and did a TON of pretty detailed web-searching and came up with very little information about the C02's. Since I couldn't find any decent reviews and had heard generally bad things about Samson mics, I ended up buying a matched pair of the...

    Help Me Make a Choice

To make things more complicated, I'd add the MXL V67g to your list...you can get it for around $90, and it's particularly great for male voices. I think it's great on acoustic guitar as well, although I can't say how it compares to the B1 or the 990.

Gibson guitars: why the high cost?

I think you made a lot of great points here bongolation. I know this is a bit off the topic, but given your statement about most American manufacturers being unwilling to pay for the manual labor required to create a good neck, I was wondering how you feel about G&L. I'll be the first to admit...

    acoustic song

Cool song. The hi-fi version definitely sounds better than the one I listened to at first! Something bothered me about the reverb on the vocals though...I guess it just sounded like it was a bit too much, at least on my speakers anyway. But it's a great song!

Found national chain sells 703 rigid fiberglass

how much do they charge? Since they're national I figure it'd be relatively constant from store to store. For those of you who've already bought it from SPI, how much did it cost?

    my humble abode

Thanks, I love the Les Paul too! I spent a good year trying to find a well-made copy I could afford, but with little luck...all the good ones weren't available as lefties. But I finally hit the jackpot a few months back! It's an Agile guitar, the new 3000 Prestige model, from rondomusic.com...

where do I go with this song?

Cool tune! Your style/voice remind me a lot of this young European guy Sondre Lerche who I saw touring with Jason Mraz (check out his music at www.sondrelerche.com). I really like the simplicity of the recording...I think it'd be perfect if you just re-recorded the guitar and you'd be golden!

    my humble abode

I've only been at this for about a year or so and have been a bit shy about showing my "studio," but I guess now I'm at the point where I'd like to share a little more about what I've created. Unfortunately I've been too busy to use my equipment much lately, but seeing it in my apartment is a...

    Samson C Compressor - Thoughts?

Whatever you do, DON'T BUY THE ALESIS 3630!!! This compressor is pretty universally thought to be the worst of the worst. I think there's actually even a negative comment about it in the description of one of the forums on this board! If you really want one of these you can find it on eBay...

    Small amps - recommendations?

I was looking for something very similar a few months ago, and after trying out Ampeg, Fender, and Peavey tube amps I splurged for a Bad Cat Mini Cat. It's one of the few amps of its size/type that actually has a speaker out jack so you can hook up a cabinet. It also allows for unplugging the...

    Newbie needs help choosing equipment

My feeling is that with lower-priced monitors it's generally easier to go the "active" route, meaning the monitors have amplifiers built in. It eliminates lots of variables in that the speakers and amplifiers were designed to work together optimally. If you get passive monitors then you have...

good vocal mic/pre combo for less than $1000

For WAY under $1000 I'd say you can't go wrong with one of the pretty universally-liked mics on this board, like the: 1) Studio Projects B-1 ($79) 2) MXL V67 ($99) 3) Studio Projects C-1 ($199) and a great but inexpensive preamp like the M-Audio DMP3, which you can find for around $120-150...

    Recording 8 tracks at once

Do you really need to record 8 separete tracks at once? As an alternative, would you be okay with using a mixer to combine some of the inputs into fewer tracks in real-time? Some people for example will record a drum kit as just one or two tracks by using a mixer to combine the different mic...
