The ADK A-51 TC gets recommended very often, but when I heard it on the Listening Room CD, I was less than impressed to be honest.

With a EMU 1820 Recording Interface w/o pre? I don't think so. Ribbons need TONS of clean pre (around +60-65dB). I'd recommend a Rode NTK (tooobey) or an AT4050 if you want a clean sound. I currently use a Rode NT2-A which is fantastic as well. The polar pattern are very useful.

300 dollars to spend at Best Buy

I doubt that you'll find anything useful to record at BestBuy, regardless of your budget. The only sell low-end consumer electronics.

Please help me with USB Soundcard.

Not sure if I understand: How can phantom power be "mediocre"?? Either it supplies +48V phantom power or it doesn't. Phantom power is not critical at all since most mics run on anything between +12V and +55V.

What is your favorite USB/Firewire Interface?

M-Audio The M-Audio range is really great. Best thing is that they are all compatible with Pro Tools M-Powered. I have the MobilePre which I like a lot. Sooo easy to setup, soooo easy to use, and it sounds great. If I had to buy a new one I would get either an M-Audio FastTrack Pro or one of...

ANybody here think High End Pre's are Overrated?

It really depends on the rest of your signal chain. If you have a top-notch mic and great converters (along with a good sounding room and decent monitoring capabilities), you need a good pre to let your mic shine. You will hear big differences when the tracks build up. I always kinda liked the...

    Boutique Preamp into USB interface?

Hey guys -- I am currently using an M-Audio MobilPre USB interface and consider getting a UA Solo/610 pre since the built-in pres of the MobilePre are a bit noisy. Would such a setup (Rode NT2-A > UA Solo/610 > M-Audio MobilePre > Logic) make sense or is it not worth having a "boutique preamp"...

    ART Prochannel, Gold, Brick&RNP?

I'm not a big fan of the Focusrite pres. I find them a bit "sterile" and thin (other might describe that as "clean", dunno)

    The myth of preamp snobbery?

I think no-one has mentioned monitoring yet. Do you have the right converters and monitors (high-end) and is your control room treated properly to be able to hear differences? I once did a test between a high-end Focusrite pre and a NEVE clone. That difference was so dramatic that I never...

Thinking about breaking up my portable rig . . .

Yes, its too sad. I sold all my gear since I didn't have enough time for producing anymore (despite record contract!!), and bought a $5k tenor saxophone instead. Being a gear addict, though, I just bought a Rode NT2-A and a USB interface and I am starting to record my own saxophone solos. Can't...

Thinking about breaking up my portable rig . . .

Mshilarious and I did a direct comparison between his moded Mixwiz and my stock Mixwiz (same model). Listening through headphones, there was a clear audible difference just as mshilarious described above (crisper highs, tigher lows). I've also seen his moded Mixwiz inside and I have to tell ya...

    Rode NT-2A vs NTK

That's one of the reasons why I am reluctant to get a cheap tube pre. Since I find the "clean" pres such as the Focusrite rather sterile sounding, I am still sticking to my MobilePre interface until I found sth better which won't break the bank.

    Rode NT-2A vs NTK

I heard great things about the Tampa -- but I recently saw one at a music store and all knobs were either wobbly or simply missing, and it wasn't even old. Bad build quality?

M-Audio DMP3 mic pre for guitar

A friend of mine gives gigs in art museums and won a few prestigeous prizes by running loops to/from/through his mixer -- its called "mixer music", ever heard off? You are on your best to compete with him! Don't forget the ground loops, they can add some interesting higher-level harmonics :D

    Rode NT-2A vs NTK

You are right. A multi-pattern mic is surprisingly versatile, even for recording one instrument at a time, and it really payed off already. I think I might be better off getting a decent tube preamp since the NT2-A sounds already very good through my cheap-a$$ M-Audio MobilePre. Are there good...

    Rode NT-2A vs NTK

Hi! I recently bought a Rode NT-2A for the sole purpose to record my tenor saxophone. Since a tenor sax is very similar to the range of the human voice, similar results should apply to vocals. I usually put the NT-2A into figure-8 (which sounds more "airy") and the signal goes straight...
