For the amount of money you will save by buying used parts, I wouldn't bother. If you do decide to go that way, then I would sugguest you go to a computer shop and buy a used computer (not parts) Just my $0.02

Have you considered making a simple drum beat? You can do it using n-tracks built in midi drum sampler

I have a PIII 850, 396 Megs Ram and a 4200 rpm drive and I can playback 10 tracks no problem.
