    overhead eq

You should just take a parametric EQ and do a sweep with a high boost and a narrow Q until you find the offending frequencies. You also might want to try a desser, sometimes the effect is too sparatic for cleaning up a harsh cymbal, but it could do the trick.

    SM 57 and Beta 57...

In terms of isolation...the beta 57, so if you have some super loud hi-hats close to the snare...the beta is definately the way to go. As far as sound goes, which ever one you like better. I'd try to just A/B them and see which one will give the result you're looking for. I generally run a 57...

    Gateing Toms?

It's impossible to do that without now how you recorded them. You'd have to actually look at the wav to determine how you'd need to set the threshold in occordance to the peak level of the track. One thing you can try is to look at the track, find the lowest db level of the quietest tom hit...

    No drum feel...........

Bus in the reverb instead of applying it right to the drums (which is what it sounds like you're doing). Compression will tighten things up. Start with a 20ms attack and 1 ms release (or as close as your comp will allow you). 4:1 on the kick and snare as a starting point...maybe 2:1 on the...

    How's my mp3 sample

How do you have those mics running? OHs? And what techinque are you using? X/Y, just straight spaced out evenly? Aside from that, for the sound I'd say the best thing you could do is try to deaden the room as much as possible if you're looking for a nice tight drum sound. Since you're using...

    Remo Emperor smooth white....?

The Emperor Smooth Whites are 2 ply heads that are supposed to be a hybrid between clear and coated. They have more attack than coated, but not as much as clear. They have more tone than clear, but not as much as coated. They will be stronger, and have a lower pitch than ambassadors due to the...

    struggling with bass drum

scoop your mids around 500k (sweep a bit to find what'll work for you). try boosting around 10k, or adding an exciter if the boost isn't enough. Also, for the compressor settings, try starting off with a 4:1, 20ms attack, 1-2ms release, and as hard of a knee as possible. if you compressor...

Kick / Bass Drum Head Recommendations?

what kind of kick pedal are you using? felt, rubber, wood, etc. are you using a focus dot on the kick? what are you using to muffle it? are you cutting a hole in the resonant head? did you try it without a resonant head?

    Help!!!!!!! Bass Drum!!!!!!

You could try using a wooden or rubber beater on the kick pedal also. Tuning the kick's batter head lower will result in more click (not boom since the boom becomes sub sonic then). Boosting frequencies at 2k and 10k, and scooping your mids. Roll-off everything below 40 since it's just mush...

    What's wrong with my vocals?

Get a good mic. Get a good pre amp. Learn ANYTHING about what you're doing. Have your "MC" learn how to double. Learn how to bring the hotness. Use a 3:1 compression to start. Use reverb. Use someone who knows what they're doing. At all. Even a little. I hate you. TO quote...

what bands are using V-Drum, and what band are real drum!?

I've found that generally an exciter can fix a lot of the problems you just mentioned (not enough click/boom/balls). I had a snare that was so bad I basically had to completely deaden it which basically took the life away. But some reverb, an exicter and compressor got it sounding pretty...

what bands are using V-Drum, and what band are real drum!?

First, it's not hard to make a DW kit sound great in a studio...which is why I think triggers are used more often to fix problems. When everything is midi, it's easy to line it up to a grid and just put a humanizer filter on it so it doesn't so TOO perfect. Second, I didn't mean to say all of...

what bands are using V-Drum, and what band are real drum!?

The Thrice album "Artist And The Ambulance" doesn't use drum triggers. You can tell cuz the drums aren't perfect (little slop in some double kick and rolls...and when I say a little, I mean I'm looking at this WAY too analy). Most triggered drums are used basically to line things up more...

how do you get that heavy Metallica sound?

they layered mesa's, marshalls, vox, etc. they had a signal splitter to elimanate the countless overdubs and just mixed distortion with overdrive, with clean, with slight distortion tones etc.

    Screaming <--> singing

by far the best thing to do is to record them on seperate tracks. i find that screams almost always benefit from a decent amount of EQ that would just make a regular vocal track sound ridiculous. not to mention no matter how much scar tissue the singer has, screaming while singing beats up the...

the m-audio is great peice of gear...i have two...but it dosent have any pre's all...which bumps the price WAY up if you wanna grab something like dmp3s with it for all the channels. if the moneys not too big of an issue...everyone on the boards seems like m-audio and i've been VERY satisified...

    snare tips

i love the acoustics of my room, and i'm not a big fan of gating really...the biggest problem is recording other drummers who don't know enough (no matter how many times i tell them) that they need new heads to record, or that they have a 100 dollar musicians freind steel piccalo, and they...
