    Pro Tools and Plugins

Most software has a "student" price, if you have a valid student ID you can a discount because they assume you're using it for a class.

How about a different approach - what mics are great, but lowest price in the group?

It seems like we're roughly in the same boat, man. I recently set up a project studio and here's what I ended up getting. Studio Projects C1 (vocals, bright mic) Marshall V69ME (vocals, darker mic w/tube) Oktava MK-012 pair (drum overheads, acoustic guitar, strings) CAD m179 (toms, guitars...

Outboards (Compressors, pres. etc) vs. Computer Software

If you're being trained in Pro Tools, consider that last post moot. You want to stick with one program and develop your skills in it so you can get the sounds you want easily. It's more about the engineer than the gear. What's your budget for preamps? You want 6 channels, correct?

    OC8 Optical Compressor

I will attest to that pedal's greatness. I use in my guitar rig. How would one go about using it in a mixing situation.....would I need a reamp of some kind?

Outboards (Compressors, pres. etc) vs. Computer Software

With that kind of budget I might look into something an M-Audio Delta 1010 and some type of 8 pre box, like the Octopre or even the Behringer unit if you're really strapped for cash. Then you have software costs, maybe :) The thing is, if you want to record drums, depending on the size of your...

    Best pre for under $200!

Do you really need 8 preamps? If you don't, then skip the Behringer. You'll upgrade from that for sure, whereas the DMP-3 will probably be useful for some time. Other options to check into: JoeMeek ThreeQ (with comp and eq!) Studio Projects VTB-1 Used Aphex 207 Presonus BlueTube

Outboards (Compressors, pres. etc) vs. Computer Software

Just saw this..... No, the Digi001 has it's own converters already. Why are you going that route? The 001 is really inferior to what you can get today, especially in the preamps.

Outboards (Compressors, pres. etc) vs. Computer Software

The UAD-1 is a PCI card made to run VST or DX effects. It features models of some classic compressors like the 1176 and the LA-2A as well as channel strips, reverbs, etc. The theory is, since it has it's own card, it won't tax the host CPU like other plugins. If you want a soundcard for...

    LINE 6 or BOSS???

the boss DD-20 has a much better Space Echo emulation....if you want the jonny greenwood sound, I'd go with the boss (although I have seen him using a DL4 live).

    Pro Tools and Plugins

What about waves plugins? I'm a student so I could get a great deal on them....unless the UAD-1 has a student price, though I haven't found one.

    Pro Tools and Plugins

What plugins are compatible with Pro Tools LE? I was all ready to get the UAD-1 card because I'd heard so many good things about it, but it seems that it's uncompatible with Pro Tools (just like everything else). What's good and compatible? I'm mainly looking for comps and eq's, for...

    Preamp Quandry

Thanks for all the suggestions, guys. Here's what I ended up going for: Safe Sound P1 - $525 Summit Audio 2BA-221 - $590 Joe Meek 3Q (2x) - $360 I went over my budget by a little bit, but I ended up saving a ton of money on a laptop I was also budgeting for, and since 3 of those 4 have...

Unfortunately I can't stretch my budget to fit all three....that's about $1700 altogether

    Preamp Quandry

I'm building a home studio to record my band, and I'm having a problem deciding on mic pres. Everything is based on a Digi002r system, which provides me with 4, and I've budgeted $1000-$1200 for the other 4. The music I'm recording is similar to Radiohead or the Flaming Lips (guitars, vox...
