small bass drums need a lift, so the beater doesn't hit them too high.

nice. i've always had a little bit of a soft spot for sonors. not sure why but most of the sonors i've heard have sounded amazing.

    Why!?

yeah i tried that once. it's quite overbearing. it's not so bad if they've got a little padding over them though, they actually sound pretty decent if you duct tape 'em on, and then a falam patch, but i don't really want that much crap on my bass head.

    Why!?

A good friend of mine was asking me how to get that death metal "click" kick drum sound, and we couldn't figure it out over the phone, so i had him bring his kicks and pedals over (since i don't have mine here)...... the dumbass is trying to get a bunch of slap using a big poofy felt...

Help me pick out some sticks

hahaha. 7a's are good for some things, but for most of what i play, a 5a AT LEAST is pretty much a necessity. technique does play a role in this as well, but for the most part, you aren't going to get huge sounding rock drums tapping along with a 7a.

sound is definitely the more important issue to me as well, but having drums that sound good and look pretty is always a plus. good point you make with the crashes too, philgood.

it's true, which is why i've only got 2. you can definitely hear the difference from right around the kit, but once you get 3-4 rows back in an audience the difference kind of dissapears.
