    Which loom to buy?

Never heard of it. Will 16" seriously be enough for you? That's one short snake!

    Which loom to buy?

For unbalanced runs, absolutely keep them under 10meters and the shorter the better due to noise issues. Hosa is ok enough if you're hooking them up once in a low duty home studio and practically not touching them and never expect to sell them, but if they'll ever leave the house or you...

Just bought an MCI JH-16 24! Questions about locking up and slowing down.

No Quantegy has sticky shed problems and no 499 ever did, it's pre-1995 Ampex (besides 499) that will be sticky. Congrats on your MCI machine! Thank god for the 114 transport or I'd think you're totally bonkers ;) Get thee over to the MCI Recording forums where there is a forum dedicated to...

How Many Regular Members Are No Longer Here?

I haven't been here that long and I record professionally rather than at home, but I love analog, check in here daily and participate whenever I have something of value to contribute. I also frequent a few other forums.

    Eq -ing drums to tape?

The "bass" EQ is probably fixed at some frequency somewhere between 80-125hz. The "treble" is probably 10 or 12khz. As miroslav and I have both explained, take care with fixed hi and lo EQs like that. It will be very easy to do bad things your signal using any more than a couple dB in either...

    RMGI moves to France

Hm, innnnnnnteresting....I guess we'll see whether this is a peak or dip in the roller coaster that is modern tape production.....

    Eq -ing drums to tape?

If you have high pass filters on your mics or mixer's channel strips and IF it sounds better using them on sources that don't need to pick up or pass anything below 50, 800, 100hz (whatever your HPF is fixed at), then definitely give them a try, but in recording it's always better to use your...

    Interconnects (RCA) Quesion

Interconns are hardly the biggest upgrade you can make to a turntable for the money and in any event cables are about the last thing you need to worry about even with a pretty high end rig (I'm an audiophile in my other life lol, been there done that with cables, they DO make a difference and...

    Eq -ing drums to tape?

Get things sounding as good as possible with mic placement alone and record the drums in a large, open room if you have the luxury. Tracking dums in small, untreated rooms will usually yield problems in the midbass and sound washy and smeared. I don't go for EQ on the way in unless I'm in a...

    Teac X-3 Problem?

Is the problem audible, or are you only seeing it on the meter?

Can I PLAY any tape on any machine??

Assuming they're all 1/4" tapes, the only things should be a problem on playback are 1) whether they're quarter-track or half-track recordings, and 2) some of the formulas may have sticky shed problems by now.

Tascam 388 Demag and head cleaning - advice?

Most pharmacy rubbing alcohol is 70%, and will say on the bottle. Don't use it, too much water. Use 99% isopropyl. If you can't find it at your pharmacy you may have better luck at a hardware store or similar. I live in the upper-midwest USA and buy my 99% from Fleet Farm for about a couple...

Quantegy GP9 "in a few weeks..."

I don't think there is, the sticky shed list here only covers older tapes far as I know. The bad ATR we'd gotten showed problems right away. In fact, there was telltale "squeaking" when I first wound out to the tails. I seem to recall the reels were both labeled with a date of October 2010...

Quantegy GP9 "in a few weeks..."

The problems aren't solved as such, RMGI's teething problems were well publicized; less publicized was a bad batch of ATR got out this year. Sure they'll honor the warranty but that doesn't help the band in the studio that has used their week's vacation from the dayjob for the year to make...

Quantegy GP9 "in a few weeks..."

I think people will be less nutty about NOS when current manufacturers can instill confidence in the consumer (and especially industry professionals) that the tape will be reasonably reliable from one reel to the next.

    Mixer suggestions

New mixers can and will have faults too, especially today's lower cost ones which can have underbuilt/overheated power supplies, and lots of miniaturized surface mount components. At least the older ones tended to designed with repair in mind; new low-cost mixers tend to be considered...

    Pre-recording EQ on Fostex 450

Far as I can tell, most outputs are post-EQ and the aux is switchable pre or post, so plug the mic into the channel input of your choice and you should be good to go whether you're coming out of the direct outs or buss outs or an aux switched to POST. If your mic is bright, first of all, try...
