I think there are a few guys floating around here who use portastudios as front ends to their DAWs, if that's what you mean. Personally, I mix down my cassette recordings to my computer and bump the levels up a little.

Lately I've been doing alot of recording on a cassette portastudio, but I have a mac and went out and got an m-audio solo so I could check out Garageband. It's a great little program. So I put a dbx 163x in front of the M-audio solo, and plugged a Rode NT3 into it...the following is what came...

The clicks don't bother me. In fact, the sound of autotune is far worse to my ears than a few small analog artifacts. I like that the song is not perfect. To be nit picky, some of the notes are still slightly "off", the vocals jump out a bit in spots, the bass might be a bit loud in this mix...
