what we need is . .

Yeah I definitely agree that this is a great idea. Unfortunately, I can't support it at all right now, because I'm deployed in afghanistan. But when I'm back in the game I would love to hook people up with gigs in the northeast, and be likewise hooked up.

    speedy fingers.

Alrighty: 1. Get a metronome. 2. Learn some scales. 3. Play them along with the metronome at the quickest speed you can perform the scale cleanly. 4. Speed the metronome up by 2 clicks (about 8 bpm) and play the scale to that. Do the best you can. 5. After sucking at this speed, bring it...

    capo topic

If you're having trouble figuring out which key works best because each key lends itself to different parts of the song, I would recommend selecting the key that most compliments the songs climax. It probably won't work all the time, but a good place to start.

    Hey guys, been a while.

For some reason the phrase shattered fists took me out of it a bit. Overall good imagery and a strong use of poetic device. Hope the tune fits it, could be great.

How about a "New Release" section???

I think its a good idea. IMO, this section should be devoted to discussions of methods to promote music, and should not turn into an avenue for promotion. This way, as the board gets more popular we won't have to wade through 40 posts of "ChEcK oUt My NeW cD!!!!1!!!1!!" threads before finding...

Heh. Not sure how I feel about that thesaurus idea yet. I mean there have been times when I've thought of how cool it would be to use certain words in a song, so maybe its not such a bad idea. All around good advice though. Its really good to chase down ideas occasionally. When you go hunting...

How can you tell if someone is "lyrically talented"?

Consider this a stream of consciousness reply. ie, I'm trying to figure out the answer as I go... Lyrics, are a method of conveying some sort of message, typically emotional, although often philosophical, political, or some other sort of artistic topic (Note how often art is tied into...

best song writing thoughts occur at night...

(insert long drawn out scientific explanation about the practical side of the brain relaxing, allowing the creative side to operate more freely) Actually I'm not at all sure if that's true. But it sounds good out loud.

    Critique my band's song

Honestly: Everything for the most part is done skillfully. Melody is solid. Vox are good. Lyrics work pretty well. There are a few lines I don't like personally, but I think thats more my preference than anything else. I think that they fit your musical style well though. But, nothing here...

BURN! Seriously though I would have to agree at least a bit. Lyrical ideas should dictate rhymes, not vice versa. There are more than a few wonderful songs without terribly obvious rhyme schemes.

Write frequently. Try to force ideas out of yourself. Not to the point of forcing entire songs, but sitting down to write can often prompt some great stuff.

Please read these lyrics as a poem,

    >i walked out raining from the elevated train >i smelled the energy, the wet leaves on cement >growing with our footsteps, water poured out of the sky >and as the streets were swallowed up forgot all our regrets smelled the energy strikes me as a little difficult to interpret. I dont really...

    Truss Rod? Other Solution?

Thanks for the help all, sadly a pro is not an option. I did the truss rod yesterday, there was tension. it turned smoothly though. Anyways I'll give it another try today and check the neck. Thanks again.

    Truss Rod? Other Solution?

A friend ordered a guitar from musician's friend. Epiphone acoustic. Buzzes on frets 5-7 on the treble strings, pretty much every string on the 12th fret. At first I figured the rod was too tight giving it a slight backbow. Gave the truss rod about 3/8 of a turn. Anything else it could be?

Clef Confusion - Can anyone read for guitar and bass?

I don't in fact play bass, but I do play a little cello and read that rather comfortably. My advice for both is to stop thinking "That note is e...e is ...here." Learn scale shapes on the fretboard and try to read within the key. Up a second, down a third, etc. This is really much simpler than...

    Looking for a thread.....

General rules of lyrics: 1. Avoid overly poetic melodrama 2. Avoid bizarre shifts of tense to form rhymes 3. Avoid stupid rhymes for the sake of rhyming 4. Remember the power of melody to revive a mediocre lyric. An exercise in this follows: Get the song "Saturday" by Elton John in your...
