    recording classical guitar

Good advice, Richie. His high ceiling is "peaked", so it may not present a significant problem. My best advice is to spend a couple of days recording in different parts of the room with diferent mic placements and seating locations and directions. Label each take (you can keep them in the...

    Acoustic guitar Mic?

My initial advice was that you don't necessarily need two mics on a guit in a mix with other tracks. The point, IMO, of micing a solo guit in stereo is to capture every nuance of the complex sound a guit produces in a space by itself. In a mix, even a sparse mix, the point is to get all the...

    Acoustic guitar Mic?

I don't think you need another mic for singer songwriter stuff. I use a pair for solo acoustic fingerstyle stuff but not usually for a song demo that includes other tracks. You can also clone a track and then pan the two tracks left-right (one with a slight delay i.e 30-60ms) to simulate a...

    Preamp suggestion for MXL 603s

So you don't like the 603s on acoustic guitar. I do. I have used it along side an MK012 for years with both DMP3 and a Sebatron preamps. I'm not the only one who likes it either. Many do. Harvey, for example, was the first person on this Board to sing its praise, calling it a "winner" in...

    Preamp suggestion for MXL 603s

I have both the 603s and the Mk-012. IMO they sound very similar through the DMP3 on my Webber OM and my Larrivee L-30. I do agree that if he can afford better mics he should get them. But I would look at a pair of the AT4041 at 8thstreet for $440 - $450 and use them with the DMP3.

    Preamp suggestion for MXL 603s

A lot of mics have a hyped high end, including the Neumann KM 184 and the AKG C 451b, yet a lot of professionals still use them on acoustic guitar with great results.

Ready for a new mic pre .. where do I go from here???

See if you can find a Sebatron vmp-1000e tube preamp. They are out of production but I think Pro Audio Toys or Sound Pure might have some in stock probably around $750 - $800. I love the damn thing!!!! I've used it on vocals, acoustic guitars, drums… with ribbon mics, tube condensers, FET...

Mono or stereo for best "natural" acoustic sound?

Well, I like a single mic in a pop/country/rock mix. With proper micing technique I can get the track to sit in the mix and perform the exact task that is needed for that particular song. But for solo acoustic stuff a two mic recording almost always wins for me. No expert here, but mics...

    real or model?

What clever device? Does it convert line level to Hi Z? I'm looking for something like that on the cheap. Oh, I liked #2 better but on MP3 it's hard to really tell.

    SDC for acoustic

I have no personal experience with these mics, but the SM81 and the AT4041 are highly regarded by many. FWIW, 8thstreet sells the 4041 in pairs with cables for $450 or a single (Bulk-Pak) for $220.

    Acoustic Guitar Mics

Try backing the mic up to 18" - 24" pointed at the neck joint or 12th fret.

    Godin Freeway Emg

Godin makes very good guitars. $400 sounds like a good deal, but I don't know what this model usually retails for. When I bought my LG a few years back I got 30% off list, which I think is a normal discount on Godins.

At worst, you could probably make one good one out of the parts from all three. At best, you just saved $800!
