Saxophonist Needs Practice Room in Basement

Hi Baffled, I just finished doing EXACTLY what you are going to do. I put sheetrock up over the two foundation walls, just to have a nicer surfece; building the other two walls, I put up two seperate sole plates, and built two walls, and I put a ceiling in over the space, suspended from the...

    How is this studio layout?

i second the all in one room idea. it complicates things immensely to chop it up like that, and it's hard to make any of those small spaces sound good. Plus, unless you have super-duper control setups, it's hard to quickyl adjust anything if you are there alone. C.

    Newbies,listen up!

Yeah,..... I'm not quite getting what the problem is. You could probably do some decent work with $800, if you had some sweet deals on materials and took your time planning it and assembling the stuff you need. I didn't have the time/planning, But I did get some used materials, and I ended up...

cheap, crude, effective pc silence/cooling mods

thanks for the comments guys, glad you enjoyed it. thanks for the diagramming tarnation sauce, it does make it much easier to portray what I am doing. I actually works quite well in practice - internal box temperature is 94 degrees (72 ambient), and the fan seldom spins up above it's minimum...

cheap, crude, effective pc silence/cooling mods

I thought I'd post this - some of the crudest handiwork I've taken part in since I was 9 or 10 years old. It looks bad, but it works well - a single large diameter fan with/heat sensitive speed, cools the cpu, the power supply the hard drive & the video card. very, very quiet.

    Garage Studio (PICS INCLUDED)

Kind of sounds like headphones are the way to go, in your room. You can also work much more easily if you are not freezing or sweating. (no hvac in that garage, as you have specified) If you get some small monitors, you can at least get an idea of what your stuff will sound like, just use them...

    Garage Studio (PICS INCLUDED)

I would not break it up into two spaces - you'll be happier in larger room. Spend the money on treating one large room instead of a tiny booth and a cramped control room. how close are the neighbors? if they are very close at all, you are going to have to think about room within room...

Starting to Build a Studio.... Need alot of HELP!!!

don't let it get to you DNA; there are a lot of people that come here and ask a bunch of questions, have an attitude, don't want to do any research and don;t like the advice they are given. there some guys here with massive knowledge, and experience to back it up - if you are smart, you'll take...

Help me - Building a New Studio - Advice for Sound Isolation

i'd seriously think about about having one large room - it's messier looking, yes, but you could have a lot more space if you considered that. It would also give you a lot of options in sound treatment, as it could be built into the walls and not take up a lot of internal space. Those separate...

    Choosing between two rooms

The big room for tracking, my vote. (!jealous!) But wow, that's going to soak up some serious work/money to treat the room to the point where the reverb won't kill you, unless that sound is what you are looking for. I'm not sure it's worth the investment for a couple of weeks. Anyhow, I'd treat...

Need some advanced help.. Home Studio. FAST!

Kfly; yea, no kidding about the mass, I didn't do any comparisons/think about glass mass-wise. I was just pretty sure it did an ok job of stopping most noise, and didn't vibrate. Added bonus I could cut it without much drama. Added bonus #2 is that the plexi was free.... on the slack side...

Need some advanced help.. Home Studio. FAST!

not to pick an argument with anyone, but I have some 5/8" thick plexiglass.... it doesn't really vibrate at all. stuff is very, very, heavy. I used it in my little (10"X10") window in one of my studio doors, but price would probably be prohibitive for sliding-glass-door sized pieces. So, tell...

    Acoustic Treatment

rigid acoutic fiberglass panels (look up 703), also acoustical ceiling tiles are made of the same material only thinner, stip off the plastic barrier on the face side and voila, very thin panels(you would need many to fill a frame), in wooden frames (3 - 6" in depth) covered with some tasty...

Technical aspects aside, what has building your studio taught you?

patience mostly. tough lesson that. the date thing as well... I projected 4 months (for entire basement rehab), going into the 10th month, probably wrap up in 2 more. concrete is very labor intensive. don't wear birkenstocks when doing construction. air nailer saves a lot of time...
