I've found my Symetrix 525 does a quite nice job on my mixdowns. This was on an accoustic though. I saw one for sale in the $75 range just last week.

I luv my octopre by RME, I have yet to A/B the pre's against the M12, and the DAC to the HD24, but it sure is nice to just run a lightpipe. A lot less gear to haul too.

I would use a matte paint and just mask off the screen and spray away. a couple of light coats. Don't try to get it in one. And of course, make sure it's unplugged. It probably won't match 100% but I'd try it.

Save a little bit more and get a pair of Neumann km184's. That was my first set of SDC mics and I have never regretted it. Mine were not matched, but did have sequential serial no.s. You may want to consider a couple Shure ksm32's also. Their reputation is very good.
