This is probably what you saw at GC. Check out the specs for how/why it works for ideas about the best DIY approach.
It won't give you isolation, but I've heard them tame really horrible rooms, and give clean vocals.
In my job, I hear a lot of VO auditions recorded from home. Some with good mics and rooms, and some with bad.
I would say that most of the time, auditions that were recorded with a Blue Snowball, and even the smallest attention to surroundings (many are done in closets, I suspect) and levels...
Baaaaaad GAS bump
I have one that's been around the block (and back, and around again), and still blows away any other LDC that I've tried (for my voice). If I weren't dead set on an MKH416 right now, I'd be all over this.....and I'm still sorely tempted. Somebody buy this bad boy!!
:D
Those are good overall pointers - all important stuff.
I think a lot also depends on what type of VO is being recorded, what actor is involved, and what the ultimate use of the recording will be.
Long-form narration demands a somewhat different sound than promo, which may also be different from...
Looking for a used but fully functional 416. Cosmetics unimportant if everything works the way it should. Needs to be a dependable everyday working tool.
Prefer the P48 version, but will consider the T version for the right price.
I can get them brand new locally with full warranty for just over...
I'll second the West L.A. Music recommendation....
...I personally like the Universal City location - a little smaller and homier, a little more personalized service, in my experience - but have had good success at both locations.
...and while I didn't get mine there, I'll also second the V67G...
In my years of work in the VO industry in L.A., the two mics that I see used most often are the U87 and the Sennheiser 416. I often see the SM7 and the RE20 recommended here and elsewhere, and they do seem to be the industry standard for radio stations, but I seldom see them in regular VO...
The Avalon 2022 that I use at work has started behaving oddly.
On one channel, there seem to be random power spikes - the VU meter jumps around and clips and pegs, even when there's no mic running through it. The other channel seems fine.
This started happening intermittently on Mondays, after...
I love being able to produce different sounds by my choice of fingers, pick, strings, bodies, percussion and other techniques. There are times when flatwounds on a P-bass are all that sound right, other times when the resonance of the semi hollow with zingy roundwounds are better.
I've seen...
I just acquired a Mackie 1402 VLZ mixer, and between that and my Neutrik 48 point patch bay, I want to optimize my setup to will allow me to combine any one of my mics with any one of my preamps quickly and easily, without having to recable every time I want to swap.
Sounds simple - does it make...
I'm too bad a player to record my bass noises :o but I can say that the Woody has a very different sound than the Beatle-basses that I've tried, which have all sounded thin and wimpy to me...much gutsier. I've never played the Hofner Club, but I'd imagine that it sounds a bit like that.
I can...
I've also got a vintage Mustang, and an EB-0 clone...and I play the Woody a LOT. There something about that semi hollow body that feels and sounds amazing...at least to me...
