    critique a new song?

Just coming up for 1am. By the time Erland wakes up he won't recognise his song at all. I was going to splice in a 7/8 freeform jazz middle 8 (or is that middle 7?) - what do you think? And I might as well mention it before you do - I think it needs some cowbell. There, I said it. Cheers AB

    critique a new song?

Actually, that's quite spooky. The percussion you did sounds exactly like what I was going to try (and fail) to do. And some of the harmony ideas are similar too. So to avoid accusations of plagiarism (and a possible lawsuit) I'm going to have to rethink. Nu-metal salsa version coming right...

    critique a new song?

Curses - foiled again by a bl**dy lawyer. So what are you saying - that my bass and organ ideas are worthless? Eh? Eh? Why, if you weren't several thousand miles away I'd... ;) Chris is right, though Erland - it may well take me about six months to actually get something recorded. Me and...

Finally! ive sorted my song out

Some good ideas there. I have a few suggestions, but feel free to take them or leave them! Play to a click or a metronome. It'll help keep the guitar tracks tighter. Think about changing the key or some of the notes in the melody - the low sections sound like they're out of your vocal range...

Sorry Ms Jackson (i am for real)

I don't know either version of the song at all, but this is very good. I agree with all the above stuff - brighten the acoustic, tame the flange/phase/chorus, pan the backing vocals at the end. But that's just details. Great song, cool harmonies, nice simple arrangement. Laid back and easy...

    The Same Mistake

Nice to hear another one from you, crawdad. This is very, very good - nice songwriting, great arrangement, great playing, very strong vocal performance. Your stuff is always so well done, that only nit-picks are possible. So here goes! ;) I can hardly hear any bass guitar at all! The kick...

    critique a new song?

Good to hear some more stuff from you Erland. I really like this one. The main comment I'd make from a songwriting point of view is that something should happen between the verse and the chorus. Personally I'd try a G7 or Gm before the 1st Cm of the chorus. At the moment it just kind of...

    I've gone techno....

I like it. It's not the kind of stuff I usually listen to, but it's got a lot of good ideas. OK, so the vocal sound needs work (although the performance is fine) - it's a bit brittle just now. Also, the scream vocals over the techno section - I would probably move them back a bit with an even...

Happy Holidays and Thanks for a great year

Merry Xmas and Happy New Year to everyone on HomeRec, especially the MP3 clinic. Like TripleM I've learned a huge amount from the folks here; it's a great place. See you in the new year. Cheers AB

A simple, lil, jammy! Nuthin' more, Nuthin' less!

I liked this. It's totally *not* what I normally listen to, but it sounded pretty good - nice groove, and the lead sax sound was pretty good for MIDI, apart from the long held notes. There's quite a lot of hiss/noise on this. In Cool Edit 2000 I used the noise at the beginning to create a...

    16 at a time!!

    I think the calculation is more along these lines: 4 minutes 40 seconds one mono track, 44.1 kHz, 24 bit = 280 * 44,100 * 3 = ~35 MB 35MB * 24 tracks = 840MB 10-base T ethernet is 10Mb/s = 10 million BITS per second (= ~1.2 MB/s = 1.2 million BYTES per second) Time needed = 840/1.2 = 700...

I need new ears... Doh! I would have gotten away with it too, if it wasn't for that pesky L1 limiter. Cheers AB

    She's 12

F*ck, that was good. ;) Good guitar playing. Outstanding vocal performance. Very musical. Really good feel for melody and dynamics. Not quite hitting the high notes on the outro vocal (3:52 onwards). But basically, wow. Such a great singer. Amazing performance. And she's only 12? Not...

    Say Goodnight

I love your voice. Very sweet tone, nice pitching. Aaah, lovely. ;) Very nice harmonies too. The guitar sounds a tiny bit harsh (especially on the D string) and the frequencies clash a bit with the vocal. Maybe cut some high mids on the guitar? Or even move the guitar back a wee bit from...

I'm torn. Mix 1 sounds a little less clear in the high end/air/detail range. But this gives it a bit more of a "retro" feel, which makes me think it might be yours. Mix 2 (the new one!) is very similar, but sounds a little clearer, a wee bit more "detailed". I reckon it's the pro mix. Mix 3...

I haven't heard this song before - sounds good. 1 is clearly the best. And very sensitive to the sound you're going for, so it's either by you, or by a pro who really understands what you're about. Apart from being a bit louder than 3, it seems to me the percussion is a little clearer, and...

    New song - comments welcome.

djool_fr - thank you for your very kind words. I'm really glad you liked the tune. macle - I tried cutting the BV completely on the last line of the 1st chorus. Gues what - it was an improvement! You should charge a sessional rate. ;) Cheers AB

all that i need is two minutes...of your time

eric - good stuff. I have a lot of comments - feel free to ignore them all; they're probably wrong. ;) I really like the song. Nice laid back feel, the chord progression and the harmonies definitely have a retro feel, but the lyrics are very up to date (and very well written). I really like...

    New song - comments welcome.

TripleM - thank you very much for your comments. I'm glad you liked the musical parts of the song! I know what you mean about the lyrics. It reminded me a bit of "Nowhere Man", but I thought it was nice and simple, and fit the music and the feel. I also thought I had a couple of nice wee...

"Unconditional" Feat. my favorite sax player

Wow. Not what I was expecting, and very very good. It kind of reminds me of Morphine, what with the low vocal and the sax. Good bits (apart from the whole thing): Great voice. The low bit, especially - very impressive. And you've done a great job mixing it so clearly - it can't have been...
