Anyone here obsessed with writing Beatles-quality songs?

I don't know about trying to emulate, I'd rather be myself. However, any good composer is someone you can learn a lot from.

idea for anyone to capitalize on if they want

There is an extremely cool little music shop near here, went in and drooled at the ric's, epi casinos, vox's, hofner basses, and told my kid "hey, look, that looks like Harrison's guitar! Or McCartney's bass!" etc. Sure enough, the proprietor tells me he's purposely stocked Beatles...

    mackie 820i

OK, I'm a dick, I have no patience, I admit it. Thing works beautifully after only a few minor tweaks. The main problem is my inexperience with mixers with this many routing options and, well, this much flexibility. Too many choices, didn't know what some of the buttons on the thing were even...

    mackie 820i

Well, finally hooked it up today, and having all kinds of problems. I'm troubleshooting, but pissed. I like the mixer a lot, but I don't know if it's worth it if I can't use reaper. The good news is, reaper 'sees' all of the ins and outs. Just, well, not getting into detail now, just all...

Best sounding album you have ever heard?

Tom Waits - Foreign Affairs I can practically smell the whiskey on his breath.

    pseudo bass guitar?

I use keyboard for bass sometimes, but I never try to make it sound like an actual bass guitar. It works fine playing the bass part, but sounding like a keyboard.

rack v. free plugins for low-end users

Killer? Don't know about that, never used a 'killer' piece of gear in my life, but I certainly am fond of it. Just wondering if I need to have it around, especially when my interface itself is lacking.

    Anyone tried mixing without "solo"?

Many times what sounds great solo'ed, especially distorted guitar tones, doesn't sit well in the mix. I only use solo when I'm repairing blemishes on individual tracks (of which there are many in my music), but never when adjusting level, eq, compression, reverb, etc of individual tracks.

rack v. free plugins for low-end users

Wondering what your opinions are regarding physical rack units vs. free plugins for low-end people like me. I have two outboard compressors I really like, but frankly I'm not convinced they're any better than some I've gotten for free (no, not illegal, there's actually a lot of free stuff out...

Should I get a compression pedal?

My first thought was, what don't you like about your tone? If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Then again, it never hurts to learn, and some of us learn best by experimentation. Get a used one, screw around with it to your heart's content. If you decide against it, you can probably sell it with...

    What's limiting YOUR recordings??

Bootsy's DensitymkII More of a compressor, really. I guess I'm misusing it.

Does the term 'songwriter' imply music and a vocal? If not, Ron Jarzombek would have to be in my top ten, tied with Shostakovitch.

    mackie 820i

Any reaper users using one of the mackie onyx 'i-mixers' (mixers with onboard firewire) with reaper? Seems like it should work fine, I'm just wary because I was burned in the past by proprietary nonsense and I'm not the most tech-savvy person. Does Mackie have a bad history of bricking their...

    comp plugin for bass

I'm mixing more and more 'in the box' these days and selling off my rack gear as it languishes. One piece I still use is my symetrix 501 for bass (along with my sansamp rbi). I'm keeping the sansamp for the forseeable future, but I wouldn't mind dumping the 501 if there's a good software...

Writer's Block. How do YOU deal?

KEEP WRITING ANYWAY. I mean, just plug ahead and make some music even if it sucks. Write a 12-bar blues about a zit on your ass. Whatever. Just don't stop writing. Works for me. Sitting around worrying about whether I can write a new song or not is a killer, guaranteed failure. Just pick...

    Original vs. Cover

I like: Feelin' Groovy by Jim's Big Ego (org. S&G) Come On Eileen by Save Ferris (org. Dexy's Midnight Legwarmers) In Between Days by Ben Folds (org. Cure) Stairway to Heaven by Zappa and the Mothers (org. Led Zep) I HATE: Redemption Song by Stevie Wonder (org. Marley) which amazes me because I...

A lot of great composers weren't the best performers of their work, including Dylan, Johnny Mercer, and countless others who didn't even bother performing. But they still wrote some great music, and the covers would be crap if the original songs had been crap.
