silence at the end of tracks

How much silence doyou put at the end of a track? I've been putting zero, which suits my short attention span when I'm listening on my ipod, but I've noticed it doesn't quite sound normal, which concerns me since I'm about to make an actual CD that some people might possibly buy. I'm not...

    Do Lyrics Even Matter?

Totally depends. One of my favorite songs ever, "Kinky Reggae," has pretty dumb lyrics, but damn I love it. Then again, if Robyn Hitchcock couldn't write lyrics I happen to love, I don't think I could take his voice for very long, though he plays a nice guitar... I don't know if I would be a...

Who's cheap gear do you trust the most?

Best to buy quality shit, no doubt. But what the hell, I got little money, and less free time, so my vote is for m-audio. Monitors, controllers, a mobile interface, some other shit... they seem to treat the broke folks (and/or cheapskates) with respect.

    Fire Engine

First of all, that's completely subjective. Secondly, you. I asked for advice about how to record a certain source, that's all. You're just being a naysayer, which I have no need of. Peace, love, and pizza grease!

Thanks for putting it more articulately than me!

    Fire Engine

Your idea of fun might not be identical to my idea of fun. Also, I didn't post saying "Hey guys, do you think this will make my music sound awesome!?" Just that I plan to do it, and am looking for anyone willing to help. What the hell's the point in arguing over musical taste, anyhow?

    Where's the fun in that?

    Fire Engine

At the memorial day parade, I heard the horn of the fire engine (not the whiny siren, but the dissonant blast) and instantly needed to sample it and make music with it. Bad idea? Maybe, but I gotta try it. The guys at the fire station near my house have agreed to let me over and honk the horn...

    ssd drives

Currently, I use my internal sata hard drive for stuff I'm working on at the moment, and an external usb hard drive as a "warehouse," moving recording sessions there I'm not working on, then moving them back to the internal when I work on them... you get the picture. I was wondering if anyone...

    Mackie Onyx mixers

I bought the 820i a couple months back, and I love it. The pre's are a significant upgrade over my old digi 001, I love it.

    best bass modeling software

I hate my bass and, while saving for one I like, I thought some modeling software could help (I currently go DI). My recordings don't usually feature bass, so it doesn't need to sound awesome. Just curious what low-cost solutions there were for bass modeling. I record in Reaper, in case that...

    Line 6 Poll

Line 6 was a phase for me. I loved it at first, but gradually grew to resent it. I sold it, but sometimes wish I had it back for some unique spots where I needed a really cliche or cheesy sounding guitar. But a cheap tube amp works much better for me. That said, I'm kind of thinking about...

    pt rant

Dredging up this old thread to provide a little closure: The memory of those three straight days holed up in the basement trying to force XP onto my new computer still haunts me.. not pleasant. And thr ASIO drivers I had to end up using only supported inputs 1 and 2. Not a huge problem since...

    Speakers Vs. Headphones?

Avoid mixing on headphones if at all possible.

My songs are way too short.

What's wrong with instrumentals? If you need lyrics so much you're looking for filler, just write any freaking thing. How many songs do you love where either the words are stupid or make no sense? Or, translate something into spanish. How do you say "I'm having trouble writing the lyrics...

Members average number of rack units and a list...

Only one, my sansamp rbi, and I'd rather mic a bass cab if I could afford an amp I liked enough. I used to have a variety of cheap to very cheap shit in my rack, and none of it sounded as good as plugins i got for free. I just decided cheap rack gear was worse than free plugins. If I can...

    cheer up everybody

Thanks for the tip. I'll seek out a stereo expander, hopefully bootsy has something, he's my hero. And no, that's the whole song so far, like I said, I need to write some more.

    cheer up everybody

I agree. I'll try to find a better patch, or maybe just go with a straight up synth pad.

    cheer up everybody

Yes, I'm not happy at the moment. And I've been drinking, so the fact that this sounds good to me is highly suspect. I need to write more, but from a mixing standpoint... little help? Thanks. Cheer up everybody!
