Looking For a Good Acoustic Guitar

It's a buyer's market in what I would consider a golden age of steel stringed acoustic guitars, and as has been said earlier, you should travel to where you can play and compare a lot of them. When the right combination of tone and feel comes around you'll know it. Good luck.

Yeah, and unlike me, 20 years from now your baby won't be in college.

    High-end Martin Acoustics

Yes, this is truly the golden age of steel stringed acoustic guitars and there are so many choices from from manufacturers big and small. Still, you can't go wrong with an HD-28 and it should be on anyone's short list for dreadnaughts. One variant you may want to look at in this price range is a...

    Rickenbacker 360/12

I've owned both a mint Rick 360 12 and a Fender Electric XII, both made in '66. Though it was mint and looked cool the Rick was just plain weird in too many ways, while the Fender was much more straightforward. I played an acoustic Gibson 12 for most of my solo live stuff then and thought an...

    Acoustic Strings...

Strings have come a long way since my early days of playing and the choices were Black Diamond, Bell, or Criterion (a string so awful they gave you 8 to a set). Back then I think it was only 4 companies that actually wound them. Today, all strings are better and far more inexpensive. Enough so...

    Acoustic Strings...

Especially for your style of play, to cut down on fret noise I'd say go with Elixir strings. Nanowebs tend to sound a little better than thicker coated polywebs but the nanos tend unravel from pick use...but keep tone a good while longer. There are other coated strings out there but due to...

    Les Paul, dead at 94

Story was he even ran a mic to the kitchen so Mary could layer on tracks while doing the dishes. There are a million stories. If Miles Davis changed music five times (as he claimed and probably did) then Les changed it six. RIP Mr. Paul.

    What an Idiot.

I don't know, sometimes smashing a guitar has some merit if it's part of the theatrics of performing. It can pay for the cost of the instrument many times over in publicity, and for whatever reason, audiences love a good smashing. How many Takamines did Garth Brooks smash? I guess it was around...

    What an Idiot.

Looks a lot like my ES-150 D from that era. I wonder if that nimrod had a clue of what he had.

Calling guitar experts: Solid Wood acoustic guitars

HIs earliest John Hammond recordings were with a Gibson but yeah, he's played Martins for the most part. Personally, I've been more prone to Gibsons and Guilds over Martins but I bought a D-21 Special about six months ago that's hard to put down.

    giving guitar lessons....

You might try subscribing to one of the online guitar instruction sites, that way you can go step by step with your wife over the fundamentals without domestic friction. Besides, you'll learn a thing or two as well. I subcribe to Jam Play and I got to say it's helped me quite a bit simply by...

Guitar Setup Question - Valid unexpected modification?

I agree it takes someone who knows exactly what you want in a setup to really get a stringed instrument where you want. My suggestion to dealing with a new tech is to tell him everything you possibly can about what you want (and that may require a little self education). If you already have a...

Guitar Setup Question - Valid unexpected modification?

It's best to let the tech know as much information as possible up front. For instance, you may want that nut to look the same because you've been looking at it for a long time while you're playing. Also, action preferences and string guages vary greatly from player to player.

    Gibson J45

It's been awhile but as I recall adjustable bridge Gibsons had undersized bridge plates and that could contribute to the top bellying or warping they have been known for. If you happened to have one with a flat top there's a chance you could get away with yanking the screws of the adjustable...

    Gibson J45

I had a '64 that I bought from Elderly around 1978 that still had the adjustable bridge which I had replaced with a rosewood/bone saddle insert. I can't remember if World of Strings or Mark Rosenthal did it but the fit was great and I retained the original bridge with the capability of changing...

    Humifiding My Guitars- Recent Experiences

I just put a damp 1/2 sponge in one of those clear plastic string packs in cases of all my acoustic instruments and re dampen them every week or so. I have no idea what the humidity is in there but it has worked well for many years and I have none of the typical problems of tops, finish cracks...

    any ultra cheap bass recommendations

I just picked up a Squier Sub Sonic for $65 locally on craigslist. What a hoot!, it's great. A baritone actually, but I'd look at Squier basses around that era (1999-2002)...pretty good quality.
