best place to listen to a mix, after it leaves the studio.

Those Avents were really flat and were a great reference...I've still got a pair out in the garage and would be using them with the entertainment center if they didn't take up so much space. Back in those days I think the Advents gave a more accurate representation than the 3 way JBL's every...

best place to listen to a mix, after it leaves the studio.

I recall back in the '70's at Brian Ahern's Enactron Truck studio that the final audio check of all mixes was through a single 4" speaker on the console. More often than not, things were remixed. Mixes were also checked using home stero speakers (Advents) in another room. I've sort of followed...

best place to listen to a mix, after it leaves the studio.

I suppose the biggest test of a mix I make is in the car at highway speeds and reference it to other recordings and the radio. I'm not mixing as hot these days in order to keep more dynamics but still expect the tracks to come in at about 75% of broadcast levels. I'll also use the tiny computer...

recording external midi sequences onto Tascam 2488Neo

Hmmm, I used to have that Korg synth but never used it on my 2488, I've usually used the 2488's onboard synth by loading the midi file to the song. Anyway, just plug the synth into a couple of channels, adjust levels and record the tracks in real time.

    Fender or Gibson?

I think you have to go back to the early 50's when Gibson and Fender were introducing solid body electrics and realize they were intentionally making guitars that didn't look or sound like the competition. Gibson was an established instrument maker using traditional manufacturing methods while...

Vocal Recording: 1 take vs. punch-ins?

I'm old school and record my lead vocals as one strand....it may take 30 takes but I look at it as a performance. Harmoines are another matter.

I'm considering selling my 2488 mkll

Yeah, the little screen is a chore, and editing there is impossible for me. I've taken to editing the individual tracks on computer and I'm really happy with the mixes that result. My 2488 is very early one and I just recently got around to upgrading the firmware so that it would reliably make...

    Using Preamps with the 2488

Check my other post....outboard preamps and especially for drums, a compressor/gate will get you the punch you're looking for.

    Using Preamps with the 2488

The process I generally use is to zero the preamps out to 'line' and use outboards pres going to a comprossor for subtle compression, then to the 2488. I only use the onboard pres for rare field recording. It's a huge diffference. With the batch of stuff I'm working on now I'm taking the...

2488: Has Anyone Had Their Transport Buttons Replaced?

I've been using the 2488 a lot these past few weeks and yesterday the play button stopped working altogether....but still clicked. So I tried canned keyboard cleaner with no improvement. Next, I ran a line from my air compressor to the 2488 and blasted away at 60psi on the whole thing for awhile...

    2488 file export problems

I suppose if you had enough time you could do a decent job of editing on the 2488, but with the small and vague display screen it would take forever. By exporting the tracks and mixing/mastering them in much the same fashion I would a stereo mix (but no effects) I come out with a much better...

    2488 file export problems

Do you mean your stereo masters or individual tracks? I've always run the 2 track mixes off both the 788 and 2388 to Sound Forge for finalizing down to a 16 bit mix for CDs. And now remastering at lower volumes for multi media DVD's. The spdif in and out has worked really well except for a...

    2488 file export problems

Yes I think I could sync it via midi to the sound card of my music computer and real time record tracks off the 788's spdif out two at a time. That would give them a common clock and I'd end up with .wav tracks I could use anywhere....like what I'm doing with the 2488. Tedeous but the mixes...

    2488 file export problems

I think the hard drive layout on a 2488 is the same as the old 788 was and easy to change out. A 788 hard drive can't be read by a 2488 however. The 788 came with just 10 gigs of space or less and everyone was replacing them. Which reminds me, I sure wish there was a way to sync the tracks on a...

    2488 file export problems

Yeah, I'll probably get to multi track recording on a PC one of these days but in the meantime the tracks are so much better after going through them on Sound Forge it's worth the slow transfer times. Plus, after backing up the wav files, I've got song tracks I can import anywhere. I could be...

    2488 file export problems

I ran the upgrade and it's working fine. Now I've got to redo about a dozen songs because I dumped the tweaked FAT files before saving the songs. This time around I'm backing up everything to a computer hard drive.

    2488 file export problems

Outstanding! I just spent 6 hours bouncing tracks all ove to get them to export. The end result though after cleaning and tweaking the tracks is nothing short of amazing. Thanks so much for the info.

    2488 file export problems

I've just recently started to use my 2488 again and have been cleaning up old tracks by exporting them to the FAT partition and editing with Sound Forge. The problem is that only few tracks per song actually export to .wav files cleanly, the rest either have nothing on them or just a portion of...

2488: Has Anyone Had Their Transport Buttons Replaced?

That makes sense. As long as the button still clicks then it's likely dust buildup. My rewind button is getting sluggish too, and when it gets a little worse I'll fire up the air compressor and give the whole panel a blast.
