    the fender stratocaster is perfect.

I disagree. To me the strat is a concept just like a Les Paul.

    the fender stratocaster is perfect.

Great topic. Yeah, it's perfect, for a strat sound. Actually it's more than that. I think you can cover more ground with one than anything else I know of. Yesterday I mixed a 22 song jazz demo for an accomplished musician friend of mine that's intended for local agents. For whatever reasons...

    The Quality Of Import Guitars

I was afraid of that. Yeah mine's an A-40 (not exactly top of the line to begin with) and doesn't like staying in tune. It's blonde and looks good though. Hmmm, maybe ebay the little dear and get an Eastman. I forgot, you need a password; Username: eastman Password: eastman0895...

    The Quality Of Import Guitars

Sorry to hear that, I wasn't thinking about getting another instrument but '62 Gibson mando is a little weak. I think it's best to compare Eastmans with other hand builts. ABC featured them not long ago: www.criticalmention.com/vg/eastman/

    The Quality Of Import Guitars

If you want to see how far Chinese made guitar can go, try a few hand built Eastmans. On the other end of the scale, I got a Jay Turser tele for around $150 that once I got the wires shielded and dressed the frets, is a nice little wall hanger. For the most part though, I still prefer...

    Jazz Bass vs. Precision Bass

There's a guy that records at my little studio from time to time that plays a '62 Jazz bass he's been playing solid since '68 or so. It's great to see something trancend being a musical instrument and become an extention of someone. For me though I kind of like the P bass layout better; wider...

    Should lyrics rhyme???

The lines would work better inverted.....it's often better to put the crappy stuff up front.

    Should lyrics rhyme???

For the most part the listener is seeking some sort of order when hearing a song lyric and rhyming puts those ducks in a row. There are variences though; first, close counts...you spareingly use words that are similar yet don't rhyme directly or use two words to get there to keep the flow. Other...

    Boiling your strings

It's the oils and crud that gets in the windings that you're trying to get rid of and yes, to some degree boiling works. I've done sometimes over the years but would rub them down with a cleanser like Comet before hand. 9 out of 10 wound strings would come out great, but that's the problem, that...

    Boiling your strings

Hmmm, they moved their string making operation out here to Coachella...maybe I should check out thier dumpsters.

What strings do you recommend for...

I've got three archtops and use three different setups. The Gibson ES 150D uses Elixer medium lights (11's) with very low action and feels a bit more comfortable than when I had 10's on it. The '42 L-50 uses regular old Martin bronze acoustic lights and for the Eastman 810CE after many sets of...

I've got your variax samples right here, limited time only!

Yep, used it today as a matter of fact. Mandola and bass, with a J-45 earlier. Mixes right in and you'd never know live from Variax. Nice tracks btw......what's the instrumentation and the rest of the food chain?

    Equipment overkill

Yeah, back in the day we all sang through our Fenders too. I've really gotten away from heavier gear over the last few years and on those occasions I'm in a band I try to avoid using my stuff........better to know the guy with a boat then own it. Mostly I use a Bose PAS these days.

Write music first or lyrics first?

Lyrics first, if it has lyrics. Actually, I work from a title or phrase, which usually dictates something melodically, then go from there with a bare outline of what I want to say and then put the rest of the music together. Then its back to write the lyric and develop phrasing, usually away...

    Just got a Variax!

That's great. You're really going to like how quiet they are for recording, and the time saved setting up different instruments.

    2488- anything new going on?

It makes cd's? Just kidding, but I never use it, I basically use it as a big 788. Quite a few functions I need to read up on.

    Write drunk/Record sober?

Couldn't agree more. Drunk, you think you're getting something done. Sober, you get it done.

    2488- anything new going on?

Using it a lot lately and after a long series of scratch recordings and workups I'll be getting serious within a month. Haven't done any upgrades, I'm v. 1.0 and it seems to do ok. Am I missing something?

How to not sing like doo doo?

I don't know, in looking back I sounded like an ass for at least ten years before figuring anything out. Poor audiences. Oh well.

    Annoying thing about variax

The Variax line of modeling instruments are nothing more than a tool; useful for some, not for others. One thing for sure, nobody is going to figure them out in a few hours in a music store. I've been using one since the fall of 2004 and it's damn handy for some live and recording situations.
