    Help with this mix...

I'm not knowledgeable enough.... just try something soft, like 3:1 and play around with it.

    Help with this mix...

It sounds complete without drums and bass. A little compression will enhance it as a solo instrument. I would ditch the chorus on the guitar.

    Help with this mix...

It is a nice song. There is WAY too much reverb on the vocal (and little or none on the guitar). This is a very personal, immediate song, so you don't want the vocal coming from so far away. I would start from scratch with the vocal effects and first see how it sounds with just some delay...

I also agree that this discussion of the process of lyric criticism could be very helpful -- especially to critics! There's no reason why lyrics qua lyrics cannot or should not be critiqued, although it is also true that one might have a different response to same lyrics when they are performed...

1 Microphone for Acoustic Guitar & Vocals

I agree -- find a large condenser that is good for your voice (maybe you can find a store where you can try a few out) and you will be able to deal with it for the guitar. When I made this choice a few years ago I chose an AT4047, which as I recall is about $500

    best mandolin for under $1000

That looks awesome. I also saw some mandolin-designed contact pickups on the elderly website, but this is the first double pickup system I have seen. I bet this would work well going through my Baggs box.

    best mandolin for under $1000

I'm not a fan of Washburn guitars but maybe their mandos are okay these days. It's really not for bluegrass, although I might play a little of that; my uses would be pretty eclectic. I guess it would easier to deal with a mic for a mandolin than it is for a guitar.

    best mandolin for under $1000

Assuming I go Eastman, how do you like to amplify it? some sort of contact pickup?

    best mandolin for under $1000

Cool. I will check Eastman out. How about Morgan Monroe, or Big Muddy (aka Mid Missouri Mandolin)?

What's the best mandolin for under $1000? It would also be nice if it had electronics.

So no matter how hard I try

I wasn't kidding about the one mic in the middle. But the second simplest advice would be: track. first lay down the drums and bass, then the other instruments (except lead guitar), then vocals, then the lead guitar.

So no matter how hard I try

I'm not sure why you're asking this question in the mic forum. As has been pointed out, you are actually asking for advice in several different areas. And you're being lazy about it. I suggest you search in the various forums here about recording, mixing, guitars, etc, breaking down your...

Thinking about a Taylor or other High-End Acoustic

This is all subjective of course. Many people really do love the Ovation sound. A lot of pros use them for concerts, plugged in. I just think they lack the warmth and depth of a "real" high-end guitar.

    Breedlove Revival or Martin Reissue?

I have a Breedlove Focus. Mine has a red Cedar top, mahogany back and sides (they also make them with sitka spruce top and rosewood back and sides; the cedar top guitars are slightly warmer and the spruce slightly brighter), ebony fingerboard, Fishman blender system. They list for about $3k...

    Breedlove Revival or Martin Reissue?

I have not played those two guitars but when comparing Breedlove and Martin at similar price points I usually like the Breedlove. Got one.

Thinking about a Taylor or other High-End Acoustic

There are two types of guitarists in this world: those that love Ovations and those that hate them. I hate. I like my Breedlove. You should definitely check them out: http://elderly.com/brand/20N_BREEDLOVE.html (not the cheap ones) Versatile and balanced. Clear as a bell. Great job...

    looking for an acoustic/electric

imho cheap Takamines sound good electric but are very soft acoustically. Seagulls are more difficult to find but sound better unplugged. So it depends on your primary use.

mandolin = hard core practice !!!

I played the mandolin for awhile about 25 years ago. A guitar player can fake it pretty well. ;) Every now and then I think about getting a new one (I had a cheap Harmony model) and learning it for real. Especially when I hear someone like David Grisman.
