    First performance...

Good for you! About your list: Have water on the stage, but also drink plenty of water beforehand (not a gallon 15 minutes before, rather, a quart or so in the two hours before you are about to sing. Learn about singing technique; it's like any other instrument. If you learn how to breathe...

    good kit

Thanks! Very helpful article. Since my son is 17 going on 37, it will be helpful for me to explain that birch is generally louder than maple (that is, if I want him to get the YRC).

What is your analysis of the birch versus maple issue?

    good kit

I'm getting a new kit for my 17-year-old son. He is a good player. He likes to play loud. He is in an indie band that is going to do some touring this summer playing shows with other bands at small venues. I'm willing to spring for something nice but within reason. My wife warned me that...

Help with buying a PA system.

How cheap is cheap? He could put together a powered mixer and a couple speakers of decent quality for a thousand or so. I like EV speakers for this. It will be very difficult to spend less unless you take a couple risks and/or you don't care how it sounds....

    mixing strumming & finger picking

I agree that Richard Thompson is the best example of someone who holds a flat pick between his thumb and index fingers and fingerpicks with his other three fingers. Personally, I hate doing that; if I'm at a gig and I'mgoing to fingerpick I put on a thumb pick and use that to strum if I want to...

Should I get an electric bass?

I just got my daughter a Hofner bass. It's a "violin bass", like Paul McCartney's. You do have to plug it in. They have three price points now. A cheap one for about $250, a nice one for about $700 (which I got for my daughter), and the German Made model for $2000+ It has the presence of a...

    best bass for around $500

So after hanging out at Sam Ash and trying several Ibanez and (Mexican) Fenders in the $500 range, we ended up pushing up the limit a couple hundred and she got a Hofner. http://www.zzounds.com/a--2676837/item--HOFHCT5001 You know, the McCartney "vioin" bass. Not the authentic German made of...

Solved Fingerstyle songs in open tuning?

I have never seen anyone replicate what Thompson does on his more difficult songs. I did figure out Persuasion, but it's still not like Richard's.

    String Bends on Acoustics

Let me put it this way: whether they are bending a lot of strings or not, when an electric guitarist plays my acoustic for awhile (and I do not have a high action) his fingers get sore and tired. Real men don't need no amps... ;)

Seagull Sound Hole Too Small For Standard FeedbackBuster...

Well, I kind of see this from a performer's point of view. It gets a slightly fuller, more natural sound if you can add a small amount of the internal mic into the mix. Maybe it shouldn't, but in my experience it does. A miracle perhaps. I of course eq either way, that was the whole point...

Seagull Sound Hole Too Small For Standard FeedbackBuster...

the blended system's controls do work; what works even better is putting it through a good DI box like the Baggs. I have a Breedlove with a factory Fishman blended system. At high volumes I turn the internal mic either off or down to about 20%. I found settings that work pretty well and of...
