Noob Dilema: Buy Mastering Software or hire studio?

The one thing I would add is to not shy away form effects so much. Granted I believe that garbage in = garbage out, effects wont ever save a recording, and the less effects you use the better. But, sometimes you need to emulate something like the warmness of a tube, or an over driven room mic on...

    On the beat... singing

I will agree to that as well. Finding the proper rhythm for lyrics, or any instrument in a song really is all about groove. Personally I go by the "More is better" train of thought. I like to over complicate my project, and then start pulling things away as I move forward. Much like a sculptor...

    On the beat... singing

I think coming up with a vocal melody, and meter can be one of the most difficult things. It just takes time. Like I told a friend once. "Just sing, don't TRY to sing, or it will sound forced, and not natural." Some things just seem to work out best the LESS you think about them.

    Mains hum?

Not, always. If you already have an external audio interface, and still have this problem odds are no matter what you are going to have it regardless. Also not to say that means it WONT go away, but that it is unlikely. It's one of the reasons I never recommend using a laptop for recording...

    Mains hum?

That is actually common with laptops. Has to do with the internal power components being so close other components (like the on-board audio, or PCMCIA Slots) in the laptop. Doesn't happen with all laptops, but is is extremely common. Another common one is a hum/buzz when you put in a CD, DVD, or...

    Mains hum?

I think drawing up a diagram of that, and putting it in the DIY section would be a great idea. Just a thought.

    Mains hum?

Both of those recommendations pretty much hit the nail on the head with this one.

    Cab Mic'ing

I thought of sticking with one mic, but eh I figure I have the mic's why not experiment. That is over all the whole point of mic'ing my cab. Experimenting, and seeing what I get in difference of sound versus Impulses. It's all about being creative with my equipment, and learning from that.

    Have Mixer or Mixerless?

For actual mixing I use the mixer in the DAW app, which as of late has been Reaper. I really like being able to key in a specific gain level. But, I do have a SamsonMDR6 I use for routing the output of my PC to my monitors, and all my sound sources into the PC. It works pretty good, and I also...

    E-MU 1212m Driver Issue..

Also take note of the error (00x0000000000666 whatever.sys) the blue screen shows and google it. Odd's are you aren't the only person with the problem and you may find a solution that way as well.

    E-MU 1212m Driver Issue..

Could be a lot of things. I recommend first making sure your OS is current with ALL updates. Also make sure all of your drivers are up to date as well.

Opinion on equipment for beginner DAW recording?

I agree as well you are definitely on the right track. Also like stated above look into a fire-wire, or PCI based interface they will give you the lowest latency. Just make sure the appropriate drivers are available for your system (Example: Vista 32, or 64bit, OsX "whatever version you have")...

    Cab Mic'ing

I was playing with the EV today, and it wasn't all that bad, on the grill, edge of the cap, on axis. So, I think if I mark out my garage floor for positions to work with phase I might be able to get a pretty good sound mixing them all together. What I think I'll end up doing is using the Sure as...

    Cab Mic'ing

I have been using impulses for quite some time now, and I feel like working with mic'ing my cab. I figure it will really help with getting more of a garage band sound. The mic's I have are an EV N/D767a, a Sure PG81, and an AKG Perception 100. I was thinking about pairing up the EV, and the...

How many plugins on avg do you use per track in a mix?

I went with 1-4 like many others. The only thing I ever mic are vocals. So, for guitars, bass, and drums I have a decent amount of work to do. ESP. since I favor a heavy sound. But, I only use them when I need them if it sounds good then I leave it be. Leaving "mastering" plug-ins behind was the...

Do you record on Vista/Windows 7

I have been using an Emu PCI 0404 in Vista x64 Ultimate for a while now, and my latency stays pretty low (between 5-6 ms). I only record one thing at a time, but even when I'm 10+ tracks deep, with no tracks frozen I still have no reason to raise my latency. Don't forget though the rest of the...

    What is talent?

Creativity as I see it is the ability to dismantle information you take in, and then reassemble it in any number of random ways that the creator/you find appealing. "Talent vs Theory" I feel is subjective. When I was in middle school back in about '92 or '93 I was 2nd chair trumpet out of a...

How to deal with writing a crap song

Funny thing about crap. We all got it, and it seems to come out on a regular basis. I have been doing this for 8 years now, and I am still fighting against a sea of crap. I honestly cant tell you how many times I have run out of HDD space, and then went through and weeded out my worst, and...
