    The Quality Of Import Guitars

My favorite electric is a Japanese 1986 Ibanez AS80 (Gibson 335 clone). My only beef is that the finish is some kind of thick polyester. A lot of imports have emphasized deep gloss over sound. My buddy plays a Korean Gretsch acoustic that is really quite a nice guitar. I have gotten over my...

    Direct Recording

Johnny A records direct out of his Marshall head. I think the clean sounds are nice but the distorted tones are really fizzy.

    Fender Champ

$250 is about the going rate for a 70s Champ. It's a great bargain for what you get. The circuit stayed the same from the early 60s until they stopped making them around 83. They used a cheaper cabinet construction in the late 70s, but I don't think they sound any different. I use mine all...

    noise gates for guitar

Has anyone had any luck/experience with pedal noise gates for guitar for live use? My Strat makes an ungodly hum (even though it is well shielded) when I have my overdrive pedal on. Do they suck much tone?

The periodic nature of the pings makes me wonder if there is some cap problem. I know nothing, however.

    stingray guitar preamp

I have a 1978 musicman stingray I guitar that I bought on the bay a couple of years ago. When it was built it had an onboard preamp that gave active two band eq. When I got the guitar it had a Mighty Mite preamp that I don't think was original and didn't work. I removed the preamp, replaced...

    Recovering from solid state....

I have a 1984 Marshall 50 watt 1x12 combo (model 4210). This is the combo version of the 2205 head (I think). These have a split channel. You can get a decent clean sound or a variety of good overdriven sounds. The channel switching is accomplished with a pedal. These can be found cheap. I...

    Cool Robin Trower Video

Trower has looked like that for as long as I have known about him. Except he looks like an old guy. It's not like he he used to wear his guitar really low like Fred Durst, but then he turned 40. He's always looked poncey. So there.

    recommendations for live classical guitar?

The preamps I am refering to (FIshman,Baggs, etc) are designed specifically for piezos. One of their tasks is to lower the impedence. They provide gain and some kind of EQ, also, of course.
