Should I buy an original SM57 or an immitation?

If you're in Europe I imagine there may be some very good replacements for the SM-57. What about the Sennheiser Evolution series? I've been paying a lot of attention to live shows (Dave Letterman, Leno, MTV VMAs, etc.) and I see fewer and fewer SM-58s and more mics that I _think_ are Sennheisers...

Short list of gear to avoid at all costs.

Crap Cables: Good point about metal oxidization. But I'm not talking about degradation over several years -- more like one or two. Hosa really sucks! I'm guessing other cheap wiring is also made under similar low quality conditions but I wonder why I have cheap phone wires that work after...

Short list of gear to avoid at all costs.

Hosa Cables Maybe all cables in this price range aren't great but I've had a couple Hosa cables become crackly and they don't do much moving so there is no good reason they should die. Not sure if it's worth it to solder new connectors to these cables. Gemini Mixers (For the DJs.) I've used...

    OggVorbis beats MP3 encoding

No one's trying to make you do anything you don't want. But Microsoft is deliberately not supporting it because Ogg competes with Microsoft's file format. Don't know if MS will ever package Ogg officially. I did a search and there are several people who've gotten Ogg to play in WMP unofficially...

    ogg codec

I'm using OggDropXpd and it's been pretty good but it's slower than LAME encoders by an approximate factor of 10. What Ogg encoder are you using and are there other encoders that somehow work faster? Thanks.

what can cubase do what cooledit can't?

Don't worry about the cocky elite. Just concentrate and do your own thing. There's no better way to shut up a elitist than to out do him with tools and methods he thinks are inferior. There are plenty of nice people who use both applications. Seek them out if you need a hand and ignore the ones...

    OggVorbis beats MP3 encoding

Ooo... crap! I'm sorry. I meant the newest version _2_ but I'm sure the newest Winamp flavor has it too. I agree that the new one sucks. But they must know this because they've continued developing series 2. I have 2.91 and it runs great. Highly recommended. But then again I've never used...

    OggVorbis beats MP3 encoding

Good enough support as far as I know. Newest Winamp comes bundled with it. And there is a pretty comprehensive list of applications that support OggVorbis categorized by OS. Shouldn't be hard at all to slip in a tiny codec into existing players. I can't believe they've been at it since 93 or...

    OggVorbis beats MP3 encoding

Sorry I don't want to imply that MP3 is necessarily not Open Source. There is an OpenSource MP3 codec called LAME. But my testing so far has OggVorbis WAY ahead of MP3. Though I just got done encoding "Call Of The Wild" by GusGus which took ridiculously long for some odd reason.

    OggVorbis beats MP3 encoding

I know this is called MP3 Clinic but I just wanted to share my recent discovery which may very well be old news to many. OggVorbis is a _stunningly_ better compression technology than MP3 especially at low sampling rates. And it's Open Source which completely gets around the problems of...

    Mackie 1202VLZ Pro

I have the Mackie 1202 and 1604. Their forte is build quality, Made in USA (if you think that's a plus), and cost. They've gotten me pretty far. But if you want a Mackie for the preamps I've read nothing but suggestions to get a stand alone like the Audio Buddy instead. I seem to remember...

songs which clip all the time but dont sound like ass?

If you really like that "modern" super compressed sound make a final mix with some left over headroom and send it out to a decent mastering facility. I'm a newbie but I keep reading over and over that you can't really skip the mastering by a true mastering expert if you want to like what you...

    ogg codec

I've just started this testing myself. The way the Ogg people designed it isn't to test constant bitrate. In fact the newest version of OggVorbis has "quality" settings that are more comparable to MP3 VBR mode. Vorbis claims quality setting of 6 (out of 10) is damn near indistinguishable from CD...

    Dark mic wanted. No sibilance!

What about experimenting with singing into the side and back of the mic? Many not so expensive mics exhibit different frequency responses depending on where you are in the pickup pattern which might minimize the sss enough to your liking.

I need help with recording my voice

Stop trying to be something else and you'll find much greater satisfaction with your performance. Step back and do your best to objectively hear your voice. Realize what you're capable of and what you're not. You can fudge all you want in the studio but that's not good practice for when you need...

Turning multimedia PC into Recording PC

98?! Ack! Even if it's the stripped down version I'd be afraid to touch it with a 10 foot pole. That was the most unstable OS I've ever used. I'd like to dub 98 "Blue Screen". Win2000 was a huge improvement! Rock solid and application crashes would almost never crash the machine. I just clean...

Filling out a flexible mic locker for voice

I've only read good things about the new Shure KSM series. As far as RODE they seem to make decent mics but reviews are very mixed depending on taste which leads me to think they are not as flexible. They're not considered industry standard like a Neumann U87 which I've NEVER read a negative...

    problems with bass/sub-bass

Kingston, but how many normal music listeners do you know own a pair of HR824s or "a car with a powerful, well installed subwoofer array?" That's my point. Well produced drum'n'bass still has a decent feeling of bass but I guarentee it has significant content far above 40Hz. Even if a speaker...

    problems with bass/sub-bass

Believe it or not a lot of that great bass you hear in stuff like drum'n'bass is way above 20Hz. Most systems can't even reproduce frequencies below 100Hz without a huge dip. If what you want is loud and crispy then you are definitely in need of controled mid-bass. Really low bass can't even...

    Dave Grohl's Studio (foo fighters)

A guy as successful as Grohl both critically and among fans deserves a lot of respect. But I saw him on TV the other night and he must have the worst mic technique I've ever seen short of hip hop MCs. I've joking described some singers as swallowing the mic, but Grohl had his upper lip wrapped...
