You Guys Ever Compress Drum Machines?

If you're using the drum machine as substitue for the real thing use compression sparingly or your beats will sound very flat and over produced. Most samples are already highly processed already. I and others on the other hand do music where I don't care much for the stock sounds. Most of what I...

Good DAW builders in the NJ/PA area

Are you asking about companies that build machines just for audio. I imagine the demand isn't that high so it's going to be a high premium. I could be wrong but I imagine the needs of a musician wouldn't be so far off from a hardcore gamer, i.e. fast CPU, drives, lots of memory, etc. In essence...

    Web Site Development - Help

Wow, this turned into a crazy ethics discussion. As someone who codes and makes music it's all a matter of scale to me. It's one thing if a kid is ripping MP3s and sending them to his friends. As a no name who has never made money through music I see it as free advertising via word of mouth like...

The sound from the tweeters sounds like...

Not all effects are created alike. There is a reason some jam packed multi-effects unit cost $150 and a one-trick pony can cost well over $3000. You start throwing reverb on everything and you will end up with a swirling ball of mud. Psychoacoustics is serious science. As far as a lot of the...

One thing I hate about analog

I think you can buy sheets of material for magnetic shielding. I think it's on the pricey side but this stuff does exist. There is also shielding paint used inside guitar and bass wiring comparments. One place I can suggest to start looking is PartsExpress.com If you're not using a power...

    Fiberglass vs. Wood Congas?

Hi guys. First off I know close to zero about drums but I'd love to get a conga to practice and learn. Aside from fiberglass being more resistant to warping what are the pros and cons to a fiberglass vs. wood drum? Is there a huge difference in sound? I see some pro and high end LP lines using...

    MXL990 Condenser Mic

Search around here but I seem to remembering reading Harvey (I think) saying you have to take the screen off or something and then it sounding good.

Got my Yorkville's YSM1P a few days ago...

I think so. First it's best to keep your monitors off the walls because it reinforces bass waves. And it's doubly bad when a speaker is in the corner like your left speaker. Unless you have a pretty big room it's hard to keep the monitors off a wall but at the very least you could move the setup...

    Is this House?

That's not house even by my loose labeling standards. The closest it comes to house is acid house-ish by way of industrial bands in the late 80s/early 90s. Kind of sounds like a Depeche Mode remix or something very similar like Intermix. If you looking to do house I suggest far less effects on...

    booted off site

I get the same error which seems to occur randomly. I can't figure out the pattern and can't force the error. I think it has something to do with HR's script that auto refreshes the page.

    Web Site Development - Help

How much time do you think it would take you to learn HTML? My guess is that it would take anyone who really works at it and isn't afraid of computers less than a week to throw up a decent site. HTML is the easy part. Designing a good site takes attention and experience. I haven't used...

    TUBE ULTRAGAIN T1953 vs DMP3

SiniS, I think most people here would support your decision. Even if you're not sure you want to do this for the long haul it's a good investment because those pieces have decent resale value.

    Confused newbie

Ack! Win98 is a nightmare. Check the manufacturer's website or send them e-mail. Unless the product is long discontinued or the company went out of business they will often continue to release drivers for product. Not sure if you're just starting out or not but most good condenser mics require...

    TUBE ULTRAGAIN T1953 vs DMP3

I think you're asking if a mic-pre should cost about the same as your microphone, right? If so I've never heard anyone say that. I've read tons of pros suggest using a very expensive mic-pre ($2000+) in conjunction with a very cheap mic e.g. Shure SM-57 to get a much better sound than you would...

    TUBE ULTRAGAIN T1953 vs DMP3

I was doing as much research on the Behringer tube series for a while and from what I understand the designs are not true tube. I believe the pres are solid state and then the signal is warmed up with the tube circuit after the gain stage. All this doesn't matter if it acutally sounds good. But...

If you HAD to use a Sure SM58...

The pros use the 57 and 58 because the rest of their signal chain can get the most out of the inexpensive mics. They aren't bad but as Richard and many others have said on this BBS the 57 through a $2000+ mic pre and the 57 through a Mackie 1604 are worlds apart.

Short list of gear to avoid at all costs.

The 20/20s aren't even in the same class as the Ones. You'll definitely get more bass from the 8" woofers in the 20/20 compared to the 6" in the Ones. I have the original Ones and haven't heard the new V2 which have new drivers. In any case I'm pretty interested in hearing the Yorkvilles...

If you HAD to use a Sure SM58...

Hope you need to do rock or loud vocals because I don't think the Shure SM-58 is all that great for nuanced singing. Doesn't really need a pop filter considering it has one built in but try to sing slightly off axis instead of directly down the barrel to minimize popping and air sounds. Back off...

Please ID these mics from live shows

Roel, you're definitely right. Many really talented musicians I've seen have absolutely horrendous mic technique. Maybe they don't get out enough and see other bands or most likely it's hard to turn the tables on oneself. Many artists also like closing their eyes when singing and I'm guessing...

Please ID these mics from live shows

I'm seeing less of the SM-58 in live performances which I am happy about because I've always hated the way they sound for vocals and these new black mics sound tons better (less muffled and nasal). And I'm seeing them replaced by all black mics with flattened ball ends (know what I mean?). What...
