I don't think this helps with the formating, but see that the clock synch is set to internal. It sounds as if it's in slave mode looking for a timecode signal from a master deck.

Run a cable from the send out to the reverb in. Then from the out on the reverb to the send return on the mixer.

A Ross 4-track back in '85. Sounded terrible, but as I learned I made the most of it and by the time I traded it in I was getting somewhat decent recordings out of it for what it was. Crappy.

Use a super or hyper cardoid dynamic. And as Mattr said point the null at the hi-hat. The 441 comes to mind for this. It's a big mic though, he may have to move the hat.
