I think someone up there hit the nail on the head. Most artist arent happy with their work but other people may view as perfect. In their eyes its far from perfect.

The only way I can think of would be to raise and lower the gain of the actual wav file. There might be another way but this way will work.
You definitely get used to listening to the same song more then once. I not only have gotten use to it I almost enjoy listening to a song multiple times. If I find a new song I like I can play it up to 20-30 times in the next couple of days.

Your computer seems to be fast enough to run plug ins so I dont think that is the problem.
It wouldnt be the recording hardware if the tracks you record sound good before you put the effects on.

I doubt what you like from those old recordings is the tape saturation and compression. Its probably more of the live feel and old classic tube equipment. Im sure maybe some of it is the tape but youll be able to accomplish a nice sound if you just work harder.
